Holiday wall decor gives your walls added life where there is usually very little throughout the year. The problem, though, is that putting up the temporary hooks required for each seasonal display and then taking them back down again can sometimes cause significant and noticeable wear and tear on your walls. It would be one thing if the positions of the hooks were all the same for each holiday configuration; you could just leave the hooks on the wall and simply change out one holiday's decor for the next one's. But that's not often the case. The bats you hang up for Halloween require different positioning than the moody holiday decor you're trying out for Christmas this year. That's where an all-important command-hook-reinforcement hack (okay, it's tape and hot glue) comes in.

For this temporary hanging hack, you're going to use adhesive hooks with the help of a little painter's tape, like ADHES Green Painter's Tape, to protect your walls. You'll need hooks that have a flat back, like the Command Small Wire Toggle Hooks, that are strong enough to hold up whatever you're putting on the walls for the celebration du jour. Finally, the fix additionally requires a hot glue gun and some glue sticks. While Command hooks can reliably hold a few pounds, hot glue adds substantial strength to the joint for more dependable hanging. You don't need to be precious about the hooks, either. This hack lets you easily pull the hooks off the wall without damaging it while also potentially allowing you to save the hooks for another use.

Reinforcing temporary adhesive hooks with hot glue and tape

This decorating hack is essential for keeping delicate wall surfaces intact. Command hooks and other kinds of temporary hangers have a reputation of being non-damaging, which is why they're critical for renter-friendly DIYs. They allow you to hang up artwork, sconces, and other pieces in places you normally couldn't. However, there are some scenarios where this is not the case. Certain kinds of wallpaper are often too delicate for adhesive hooks, and hangers have also been known to pull the exterior off of drywall or occasionally wreak havoc with paint, despite being touted as products that won't leave marks. Assess your walls, and if you're worried about any potential pull on the outer layers, painter's tape will be crucial in keeping them safe.

Before you hang the hooks, determine where each piece in your holiday gallery will go. Clean the area, ensuring it's dry and free of dust or dirt. Mark each spot with a piece of tape. If the decor item or art piece weighs a good deal, you may need to reinforce the spot with a second piece of tape. Rub the tape to make sure it's sticking securely to the wall. Next, peel the film off of the temporary hook's backing, and add some hot glue to it. Press the hook onto the patch of painter's tape, holding it for a minute to let the hot glue dry and hold the hook tight. Press the tape it into the wall one more time to ensure the adhesive is set fast. Once that's done, you have a strong but damage-free way to hang your artwork and holiday decor pieces.
