If you want to decorate for Christmas on a budget this year, you'll be happy to learn that many of the materials you'll need to create a custom wreath are already in your storage. Creating Christmas decorations from household items allows you to save cash during an expensive time, as well as express your creativity. So, grab a wire hanger and a box of Christmas ornaments as the building materials for this craft.

The hanger needs to be fully made of wire. If you don't keep wire hangers, brands like Mainstays Drip Dry Wire Clothing Hangers are found at low price points, online or at a local store. You'll also need a pair of needle-nosed pliers, some scissors, floral wire, and some small wire cutters.

Since hanging a bare hanger on your front door will look a little Scrooge-y, you'll cover the hanger for this DIY. The Christmas ornaments and some ribbon will take care of this. The ornaments should have a wire loop on top, and most of them should be balls. This gives the holiday door wreath its full-bodied appearance.

Building the wire hanger door wreath for the holidays

Reshaping the wire hanger is your first order of business. Pull on the top and the bottom to open it up and create a rounded shape. However, don't change the shape of the hook at the top, as that's how you'll hang the wreath.

Next, snip open the ring and string the Christmas bulbs onto it, starting at the non-hook end. Alternate the colors and designs to make the wreath look more interesting. If you'd like a themed wreath, mix in accent ornaments. For example, place a few Woodland Creature Ornaments among some brown and green bulbs to create a forest-friends vibe. Or, create a base of silver and gold bulbs, and sprinkle in accents like Shatterproof Tinsel Ornaments for a bit of texture. You can even weave greenery around the bulbs for a fuller, more natural look.

Once the hanger is full, twist the open ends together to close the loop, using the pliers if necessary. If you have a few flat ornaments or an item, like a large bell or bow, attach them as a finishing touch. Then, hang your new wreath to accent your indoor decor or to fill your front porch with festive Christmas joy.
