Most of us know that buying Dollar Tree stuff gives us a leg-up in the kitchen on the cheap, what with those cute bamboo cutting boards and other kitchen-related trinkets, and all of 'em mostly costing around $1.25. Very wallet-friendly, indeed. As it turns out, the financial leg-up you get in the kitchen with that product can be extended to an unlikely place — the shoe bin by the front door. Provided, of course, that you're the MacGyvering type. It's just a matter of creating a shoe rack that'll only set you back maybe $10 or $15 max.

This Dollar Tree cutting board hack asks you to turn seven Cooking Concepts Bamboo Cutting Boards into three open-backed cubbies that can store your shoes. If you feel like you need more space, you'll need to add two boards for every new cubby you wish to add. For example, a shoe rack with four cubby spaces requires nine cutting boards. One with five cubbies asks for 11 boards. You get the idea.

This genius shoe storage idea also calls for a glue gun and glue sticks. If you don't have those on had, you may be able to find them on the cheap at the Dollar Tree. Just look for Crafters Square Mini Hot Glue Sticks in the craft aisle.

Building the Dollar Tree shoe cubby

The cutting boards turn into a shoe cubby once you glue them all together. Once you take the boards out of their plastic wrap, run a line of hot glue down the end of one of them. The glue needs to go on a narrow end, not the long side. Next, press the narrow end of another cutting board onto the glued end, creating an L-shape with the two boards. Hold the boards in place for a couple of seconds until the glue sets. Run some glue on the end of the bottom part of the "L," and then press another board against it. If you've done this correctly, you should have what looks like a small three-sided table. Follow that by adding glue to the end of another board and then fastening that board to the place on the "table" where two cutting boards meet. Do this until you've glued together all the boards, and you have a cubby with three slots.

You can up-level this chic Dollar Tree DIY in a couple of ways. Cut out some DT's Home Collection Multi-Purpose Floor Mats so that they fit the boards. Glue them on the top of the cubby to protect it from shoe scuffing. Finally, hot glue can weaken in damp, wet environments. If you keep wet shoes on your cubbies, the glue may degrade over time due to the dampness caused by the shoes and the proximity to the front door. Therefore, you may want to add some mxuteuk Stainless Steel Straight Flat Brackets to the pieces to keep all the boards fastened together.
