Enhancing a home's visual aesthetic or decorating for certain times of the year often has people hanging things throughout the house — lights, art, and more. If you enjoy hanging things here and there, you've probably used simple, clear adhesive hooks, like Jwxstore Heavy Duty Self-Adhesive Hooks, to achieve your desired look. The problem is that, when you go to take them down, the adhesive on the back of the hooks often leaves behind a sticky mess on your wall. Getting the sticky residue off can be a real challenge. It can also pull some of the paint off the wall if you're not careful. You can save your walls from the damage caused by such adhesive hooks with a clever hack that uses only one thing: painter's tape. You'll place painter's tape on your wall before sticking on your hooks. When it's time to take the hooks down, remove the tape, and everything should be nice and clean.

Painter's tape is an adhesive primarily used to create clean, straight lines when painting.  The best part about painter's tape is that it's explicitly manufactured to remove easily and cleanly from painted walls, molding, and anything else that you might stick it to. When you peel it from the material, it comes off cleanly, without leaving any residue or stickiness behind.

How to use painter's tape for your adhesive hooks so they remove easily

For this painter's tape hack, you'll need to use enough painter's tape to cover the wall space where your hook goes. Start by cleaning the area where you'll put your hook, making sure it's dry and free of dust or hair. Next, you can rip or cut two to three pieces of tape and place them across the area where you want to place your hooks. You may need more or less tape, depending on the size of your adhesive tape and hook, to ensure it's fully covered. Then, take the backing from your adhesive hook and press the hook onto the painter's tape.

If you want a little extra security, you can add a couple more pieces of painter's tape on either side of your adhesive hook, and again over the top and bottom to secure it in place. Now, you're all set to hang your decor, art, garland, or anything else you have in mind. To remove, grab a corner and gently pull at the painter's tape; you should be able to remove the entire hook and tape without any scuffs or sticky residue. You can use this tape hack for saving your walls from damage with command hooks, too.
