Browsing online, it might seem like you've run out of ideas for clever Dollar Tree hacks for holiday decor on a budget, but then you see one that surprises you: creating large light-up present decorations for your home. Making light-up present decor is an easy DIY that uses a few Dollar Tree staples. This DIY is courtesy of TikToker @foodtalkdaily and it's such a clever yet simple project you can easily customize to your heart's content. The result will look like a pricey holiday decoration you bought off a store's shelves, and you won't believe it literally started with kitchen skewers.

This holiday DIY decor requires a package of Cooking Concepts Bamboo Skewers, a roll of Premier Just Yarn, and a roll of Christmas House Wire-Edge Ribbon. For the lights, you'll need to add a set or two of Christmas House Multi-Color LED Lights, though you could also buy the warm white lights if you prefer. All of these items are found in-store or online, coming in at around $15 for the complete project. You'll also need a durable cutting tool and hot glue. Once you have your supplies together, you'll find the presents are easy to assemble. You will lay out the skewers and create large squares by attaching them to each other, then decorate accordingly with lights and ribbon.

Creating a DIY light-up present decoration with Dollar Tree items

You start by removing the skewers' ends, then gluing three together, creating four sets of three each. Use a piece of packaging tape to create a large square from the bundles. Add some glue to the corners as well to ensure it holds together, then repeat. Next, you'll create a three-dimensional cube by attaching your squares together. Use a piece of yarn on each corner to add extra support. Now you'll weave the yarn around the squares in whatever direction you desire, creating a zigzag pattern for the present(s). The finishing touch is to take a length of ribbon, wrapping it around the cube as you would a present, then tying on top in a bow. If you don't want to make a bow or you don't like the ribbon bow, you could swap out a pre-made bow, such as WILLBOND Buffalo Plaid Bows and Burlap Decorative Velvet Bows. Choose the fabric you think best fits your overall look for the present.

When it comes to the lighting, you can place your lights at the bottom or drape them down, hiding the battery pack inside the bow. Another approach is wrapping the present's frame with the lights. You could also spray paint them with seasonal palettes like red and green, or gold and silver. A great holiday decoration for your floor or under the Christmas tree, you can use this as a holiday centerpiece DIY that can make your dining table more elegant. Skewers come in a 100-piece pack, so try repurposing the leftovers in another creative project, such as a DIY stylish Bohemian vase.
