Trash cans: We certainly need them, but that doesn't mean we have to like how they look. On top of being the source of many funky odors, trash cans oftentimes stick out like sore thumbs. They're typically not the most attractive piece in the room — a good reason why people try and hide them from plain sight — one place being inside a cabinet. Although it's a great idea, not everyone has extra cabinet space they can free up for such a big item. Instead, you can take this idea a little further and disguise your garbage in an enclosure that's the same color as your wall.

It's understandable if you want to banish kitchen trash can eyesores, especially if you have guests coming over for a visit. By keeping your garbage in a receptacle that blends with your home's paint color, frankly, you might disguise it so well they don't notice it at all. There are lots of containers out there that are more stylish than your typical plastic version, like this Brushed Stainless Steel Trash Can. Yet, having one that practically disappears? That's even better. For this DIY, you'll need an enclosure for your trash can that can be painted, and also paint that will match whatever room it's going in.

Paint a trash can enclosure to disguise it in plain sight

You may have a paintable container already that can help hide your trash. But if not, check thrift stores for a trash can enclosure, an old cabinet, or a similar wooden box that could serve as a trash can surround. It can be an enclosure for your entire trash can or something that will simply house the bag. You might have an easier time finding a container for a bathroom, which requires a smaller container. Just make sure it has a lid. After all, using a lid helps with hygiene, keeping pests at bay, and controlling odors.

You're now ready to paint the trash enclosure or receptacle to match the wall color. Before doing so, clean it up and lightly sand the wood if it needs a little TLC. Give the piece a couple of coats of paint, allowing it to dry in between them. It'll be like giving your kitchen waste bin a stylish makeover. Once it's completely dry, you can set it against the wall so that it blends into it. Sure, you'll still have to deal with all the joys that come with trash, but it'll be a lot less noticeable.

If you have woodworking skills, you could also construct an enclosure yourself. Build a cabinet frame and door out of wood. Then, sand the piece and attach the door with hinges, which will be helpful for taking your garbage in and out. After your cabinet is finished, paint it with your home's leftover paint. Your trash can will no longer be an eyesore — but you may find yourself wanting to show it off!
