Duvets or comforters are the classic bedding covers. They are fluffy, soft, and just add a comfy appearance to your bed. However, they are sometimes stuffy, hot, and a pain to get just right. Thankfully, there is another option when it comes to making your bed. Though it's not as common, you can use a quilt on your bed as a blanket as well. Depending on what you want out of your bed covering, it can often be a much better option. 

Before deciding which one is more ideal for you, it's important to understand the basic differences between a duvet and a quilt. Quilts are generally made from a few different layers of fabric and wadding sewn together with stitch patterns to keep the wadding in place. They don't need a secondary cover, though they can be hard to wash because they're so bulky.

Duvets, on the other hand, are fluffy inserts that go into a cover to keep them clean. They can be made from all sorts of materials, as can their covers. This makes them easier to wash, but a pain when you are trying to make the bed. However, if you buy multiple covers, you can also easily swap them out as desired. Duvets are generally fluffy and warm, though you can buy ones in different thicknesses. However, out of duvets, quilts, and comforters, the duvet is going to keep your bed the warmest, but that may not always be what you want.

The best way to clean a quilt is via handwashing and spot cleaning. To avoid having to wash the quilt too often, place a top sheet under it, which you then cover yourself with. On the other hand, duvets are a little easier to clean as you mostly just have to wash the cover, and you can use a machine. But they are much more of a pain to put together. It can be quite a workout to get the duvet inside just right so it lies flat.

Price is also worth considering. While there is a pretty huge range in the prices, in general, duvets cost more than quilts of a similar quality, especially when you take into account the price of the cover. The final benefit is that a quilt can provide a lot more from a decorative standpoint. Even if you get a plain-colored one, they tend to offer some stunning patterns that catch the eye and make your bed stand out, such as the coin pattern quilt everyone wants.
