What The Sandpaper That Came With Your Washing Machine Is Actually For

If you've unboxed or recently shopped for a new washing machine, you may see that tucked inside the accessory pack with your hoses and manual is sandpaper. Not instructions, or some kind of jokey bonus, but actual little squares of abrasive grit. You're not imagining it! Many washing machines now arrive with these little extras, but you may be wondering why. At first glance, it doesn't seem right — sandpaper and laundry don't really go together. However, you might be surprised to find out that there is an actual practical reason that manufacturers include them with your washer; it's all about stability and preventing access movement once your washing machine is in place.
It's important that you're clear that this sandpaper is in no way intended for your clothes or washing machine drum, or as a household item to clean your washing machine. But, they do have an important purpose and shouldn't be ignored. The abrasive pads are not about the clothes or machine at all, really. Their primary purpose is to deal with traction. When a washing machine spins, especially during those high spin cycles, the force from the clothes in your machine can actually make your machine move, "walk," or shimmy right across the floor. This is especially apparent if you have tile, hardwood, or vinyl flooring — any sort of flat surface without grip that can lend itself to your machine sliding.
How to use the sandpaper pieces for your washing machine
Before you go throwing away those abrasive squares, you might want to hold onto them. Take some time to prepare the space so that you can use them effectively. Clean and dry the floor area where you're placing your washing machine first, removing dust and ensuring it's a level space so that your washing machine sits evenly. When removing an old washing machine or when installing your new one in its space, it's heavy and awkward to carry alone. Have an extra person or two that can help you to move it, or if you're getting your machine delivered, have them help you to put it into place.
Once you find the best place to install your washing machine, you can add the sandpaper pieces by applying them under the feet of your washer before using it. They come with a sticky backing so you can remove the back and stick them right on the floor, and place your machine's feet onto the sandpaper top. If you didn't use them, but have noticed prior that your machine has moved or slid, this is the best little handy tool to help stop it from digging up your floor. Your washer will sit steady and quiet. If your washing machine did not come with these but you feel it would be helpful, you can pick up an orbital sander pad, like this Dura-Gold Sanding Disc, and it will do the job just as well.
