For flooring design expert Christina Haack, there's one type you are better off avoiding at all costs: trendy flooring. Checkerboard tiles, for instance, which were quite popular in the 1950s, have recently made a comeback. But unless you want to go all-out with a retro-inspired aesthetic, there's really no reason for you to give this resurfaced fad a shot.

"Flooring is my thing. It's the first thing I notice when I walk into a house, and in my opinion, it makes or breaks the home," Haack said (via People). So what does the "Christina on the Coast" star recommend to homeowners instead? "I would say stick with a bit more, if you can, on the timeless side," she advised in a separate interview with Parade Home & Garden, adding that a classic color or flooring works best for the whole house, as it will never go out of style. By following Haack's tip, your home will never feel outdated even when the latest flooring trend fades.

Unlike timeless flooring that's built to last and age gracefully, trendy flooring inevitably goes out of style, as it is typically designed to make an immediate visual impact in relation to the common themes that are popular during a specific period. From bold patterns to vibrant colors and very specific textures, trendy floors have the ability to instantly draw attention because they offer something fresh, exciting, and beyond the ordinary options. But, at the same time, they aren't practical for long-term use, and they are rarely versatile enough to accommodate changing furniture styles and wall colors. Additionally, once these designs become widely available in homes, social media, and real estate listings, their novelty starts to wane, and so when homeowners' tastes evolve, they may find such designs out-fashioned and dull.

For someone who knows a thing or two about home designs and has her own line of flooring, Christina Haack strongly recommends leaving outdated flooring trends in the past and avoiding home updates that are a complete waste of money. She's all for classic or timeless flooring, as it is a safe option for any space. But if you want to add more personality to your floors, Haack suggests using rugs, because they are more affordable than flooring materials and easy to switch out if you've grown tired of one design.
