The ZZ Plant Variety With Stunning Dark Foliage That's Great For Small Spaces
Dark, moody houseplants are trending for 2026, but that's far from the only reason to consider a ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia), a popular houseplant that comprises about 17 varieties. This native of eastern Africa has won hearts for being easy to grow and tolerating a variety of growing conditions. If you don't have much space, the ZZ cultivar 'Raven' (Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Dowon') is an inspired choice because it only grows to 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Its size is suitable for tabletops, nightstands, and bathrooms. If needed, you can keep the size in check as it grows by limiting its pot size; when repotting, choose a new pot the same size as the existing one or just slightly larger.
A ZZ 'Raven' instantly lends drama to your space with its unique foliage color. This evergreen, herbaceous perennial undergoes a spectacular color change, sending out lime green new foliage that eventually darkens to deep purple and near-black. The shine on these leaves are striking and may look like they are polished or even plastic.
Easy care and growing tips for ZZ 'Raven'
Before purchasing a 'Raven,' be sure you're fully up to speed on how to care for a ZZ plant. It should be planted in moist potting soil that drains well. Just as succulents store water in their leaves, ZZ 'Raven' holds it in its fleshy rhizome and other parts, making it drought-tolerant. Let soil dry between waterings. It's hard to kill this plant, but overwatering is one way to do it, as it is susceptible to root rot. You can fertilize up to twice yearly with a balanced, half-strength houseplant fertilizer, though be sure to follow label instructions.
This ZZ variety thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or artificial lighting. You'll need to control its exposure to direct sunlight, which can scorch leaves. Don't completely deprive it of light, though, as doing so is the biggest mistake most people make with their ZZ plant. If it receives more light, ZZ 'Raven' will produce flowers, but they are tiny, unremarkable, and may even indicate your houseplant isn't happy.
Although ZZ 'Raven' has virtually no disease or pest issues, it does have a couple of downsides. The plant is toxic to humans and pets, causing contact dermatitis and diarrhea if ingested. These plants can be easily propagated, but it's technically illegal to propagate the patented ZZ 'Raven.' Learn more about why propagating plants could cause you a legal headache.
