IKEA's Ultimate Affordable Side Table: Too Boring, Or An Underrated Versatile Choice?

When selecting furniture for your home, it's important to weigh a number of factors, such as price, style, and versatility. Admittedly, it can be difficult to check all of those boxes in a satisfactory manner, but some brands endeavor to do just that — and one of the most accessible brands is IKEA. Known for its often straightforward and affordable items that are easy to bring into your environment, some of IKEA's best sellers are so stylistically simple they might be classified as boring. One such example is the LACK side table, which can add storage and style to any room.

Despite how simple and unexciting it is, the LACK side table ($16.99) is a beloved IKEA staple that has been well reviewed by literally thousands of customers. Reviews of the LACK mention that the side table is sturdy and fulfills its purpose perfectly. Many buyers even speak positively about how simple the design is: "love the simplicity and clean lines of this table," one customer titled their review. As one of IKEA's most highly-rated best-selling products, it seems like this affordable side table is a crowd-pleaser, in spite of its underwhelming elements. And its lack of style means it won't be going out of style any time soon. While I don't personally own a LACK side table, the simple shape is highly appealing to my more minimal sensibilities and I can easily imagine styling it in my living room. Though the price point could not be more perfect, the main star of this piece is its versatility.

Why the LACK could be a great choice for you

You can use the LACK in any room as a side table, nightstand, coffee table, or even as storage. But, the side table is simple, there's no denying it. It's so basic in its design, in fact, that it is nearly brutalist. From my vantage point, the sharp lines, thick legs, and no frills make this less of a statement piece and more of a functional item. Function matters, though, especially if you have an active home like I do, where fancier items might not fare as well. The LACK does allow for a little personalization in your choice, since it is available in three colors: black-brown, white, or white stained oak effect. If I were to purchase a LACK side table for my home, I would offset the simplicity of it with my favorite vase of dried flowers and a nicely scented candle.

Since it is not influenced by any trendy elements, it would be easy to make the LACK reflect your own style in a number of ways. You could purchase one of the light color options, then paint it in a manner that vibes with your home's style — essentially turning it into an accent item. There are also many ways to stunningly transform your IKEA LACK so you won't recognize it as a basic budget buy; inspiration online abounds. While I love the idea of revamping the LACK, my current lifestyle with multiple young kids at home doesn't leave me with a lot of extra time. For other busy parents or individuals with jam-packed schedules, covering the LACK with decorative contact paper or a tablecloth could quickly change the entire appearance without making a mess.
