Should You Wash Store Bought Towels Before Using Them?

When buying something new, it's almost impossible to resist showing it off. However, some items may require washing before use, such as linens, tablecloths, and towels. Now, new towels and clothes are not as likely to breed bacteria while sitting dry on a shelf. The real risk for biological contamination happens once the towel becomes damp. 

Still, shelf-stacked linens are exposed to countless people and fingertips, and many would agree that washing your store-bought towels before using them is obvious. The Cleveland Clinic backs this up, too, but not for the reason you may think. So, be proactive in changing out your bathroom hand towels, and here's why you should think twice before using your brand new towels.

There are many benefits to giving your new, store-bought towels a little spin in the washer before hanging them in your bathroom or kitchen. Most store-bought items are coated with chemicals during manufacturing or can pick up chemicals during transportation and storage. Like these and other fabric items, towels are also exposed to chemicals during manufacturing. These chemicals may stick to the cloth and can potentially trigger skin sensitivities and/or allergies if not washed before use.

Another reason to wash your towels is to ensure they dry you efficiently. New towels are often coated with a silicone finish to make them appear softer on shelves, and these chemicals inhibit their absorbency. Likewise, the dyes and extra fibers on new towels can also transfer to your skin and surfaces if not thoroughly washed. To prevent skin irritation and lint gathering on your freshly washed skin, throw your new towels in the washing machine. Doing so will ensure you get maximum absorbency, softness, and comfort from your towels.
