The Kitchen Item To Grab At The Thrift Store That Doubles As Bathroom Storage

When it comes to shopping for bathroom storage, most people automatically head straight to the bathroom aisle — or, if online shopping, type "bathroom storage" into the search bar. And while that approach certainly works, some of the most stylish and practical storage solutions can be found in unexpected sections of the store — like the kitchen aisle, for example. In fact, there are plenty of common kitchen items you can use to declutter and organize your bathroom. And one savvy thrifter recently took to TikTok to share the kitchen item they transformed into a chic bathroom storage unit. The item in question? An old spice rack.
"I turned this $15 spice rack from [Facebook] Marketplace into the perfume shelf of my dreams," creator @gbutt_ wrote overtop of a video showing a wooden spice rack mounted on the wall and styled with her collection of fragrances. The clever idea certainly caught the attention of fellow thrifters and avid home decor fans, with one commenting on the post, "Omg genius idea." Of course, while this creator turned to Facebook Marketplace to find the perfect spice rack storage unit, there are lots of places you can look for secondhand spice racks to make your home organization and storage more sustainable. Local thrift shops, for example, are a great place to start, as are resale sites like eBay or Etsy. Or who knows, you might even already have one tucked away in your own kitchen.
How to style your kitchen spice rack-turned-bathroom shelf
If you love the idea of using a spice rack as bathroom storage, but don't have a big perfume collection, there are plenty of other items that fit perfectly on its shelves. Instead of fragrance bottles, you could store lotions or skincare products, or even use it as a makeshift medicine cabinet. A wall-mounted spice rack is also ideal for smaller toiletry items like cotton pads and cotton swabs — especially when stored in matching cups or containers, such as small mason jars, old spice jars, or something like the MKOSAB Clear Apothecary Jars Set from Amazon. Styling items in matching vessels instantly elevates the look while keeping everyday essentials organized and within easy reach. And if your bathroom already has ample storage, you can even reuse an old spice rack to beautifully hang plants and flowers on your wall for a touch of greenery.
Once you've decided what you want to store, the next step is customizing the spice rack to complement your space and better suit your personal style. Painting or re-staining the wood can give it a fresh, more custom feel. For an extra layer of personality, consider lining the back panels with patterned wallpaper. Or, if the rack includes a lower bar — often used for holding paper towels — find some colored or patterned hand towels to hang from it, such as the VOOVA & MOVAS Checkered Hand Towels from Amazon.
