Turn An Old Wooden Window Frame Into A Rustic Storage Solution

You can find tons of beautiful ways to repurpose an old window into home decor, but you may not have thought of the clever DIY project seen in a video on the YouTube Hometalk channel that transforms an old wooden window frame into a rustic storage and display solution. You can create a decorative yet practical display that resembles a pot rack suspended from the ceiling in a kitchen, but with much more versatility and rustic appeal. This transformation looks great in a kitchen but could be adapted for virtually any room.

The project could not be simpler — it primarily involves attaching hanging hardware to a window frame with no glass. The DIYer used dollar store cup hooks, screwing one near each corner of the underside of the window frame after measuring an equal distance from the center. Once those four hooks are in, measure the full length of the frame from left to right and the center of each side so you can use those measurements on the ceiling for installation.

Screw two cup hooks into the ceiling, using the measurements above; you may need anchors if the window frame and planned decor items are heavy. The Hometalk DIYer used chains from dollar store hanging baskets to hang the window frame, hooking one end of the chain on each of the hooks in the corners of the frame. The center of the chain is then attached to the cup hooks on the ceiling.

Hanging hardware and rustic objects turn a window frame into a treasure

The beauty of this rustic window frame storage solution is that you can customize it in nearly endless ways. Before you start hanging items on the frame, consider if you want to keep the original treatment on the wood. If the paint is in bad shape, you may need to strip it from the frame. To complement your decor, you could paint, stain, or distress the frame; try a chip brush, the simple hack that makes any decor look rustic.

Now the fun begins, as you gather decor objects and items you need a storage place for. The Hometalk DIYer used various methods for hanging objects — wrapping them with twine, using S-hooks, adding more cup hooks to the frame, and even balancing an item on top. The content creator hung cooking pots, decor items, and baskets on her frame. You could do the same, or also hang drying herbs, cutting boards, or collectible kitchenware. If you like, accessorize it with some rustic kitchen decor from the thrift store. That said, when styling this type of kitchen storage, it's important not to overcrowd your items. The frame's utility isn't limited to the kitchen. Consider adapting the window frame for other rooms, perhaps for hanging art objects in an entryway, antique toys in a child's room, or tools in a man cave.
