The Tassel Detail Trend Is Here To Stay: Here's How To DIY The Look

The key to a successful design is often in the details, and one way to achieve a gorgeous look is to focus on trim. In 2026, we're seeing a resurgence of tassel trimmings incorporated into our interiors. These pieces provide a more tactile feel and introduce a softness to our spaces. Tassels have often made a return in maximalist designs, but even more minimalist-inspired styles are beginning to use this decorative touch. Whether through pillows, lampshades, blanket corners, or as a singular decorative element, they can be added nearly anywhere. And if you want a custom color, length, or material, you can always DIY it yourself.

While tassels may not be the home design trend emerging among homeowners in 2026, they're certainly a feature likely to stay. Designers predict that tassels will continue to add texture, with some folks speculating that tassel and fringe details may be replacing scalloped trims. Designer Kailee Blalock of House of Hive Design Co. spoke to Homes and Gardens, saying tactile details like tassels "help break up solids, soften edges, or highlight the architecture of a piece of furniture." When looking for inexpensive ways to add texture to your home, tassel details are a great choice. Some homeowners have purchased strands of tassels that they can attach to the bottoms of their existing furniture using Velcro or fabric glue. However, others opt to DIY their own tassels for the perfect look.

To DIY your tassels, choose your textile, such as a cushion, blanket, or tablecloth. You'll also want yarn and a tapestry needle. Yarn thickness can vary based on your project needs. For a pillow or cushion tassel, you'll cut two strands of 8-ply yarn, each roughly 20 inches long. Thread the yarn through the needle. Next, sew it into the corner of your cushion, match the ends, and cut them off. Use the strands to create a looped knot at the corner of the cushion. Spread the strands into two sections, then grab a piece of cardboard cut to the length you want your tassel. Loop yarn around this cutout. A fuller tassel may need more wrapping. Cut off the bottom of the strands, leaving the tops intact.

Now, take your cut strands and place the middle over the knot on your cushion corner. Using the strands separated earlier, tie a double knot over the middle to secure. Fold them down to create the tassel and comb through with your fingers. Grab the other strand of yarn and align it above the cushion corner, extending it to the length of the tassel. Form a loop at the bottom of this strand and then begin wrapping it around the tassel wherever you prefer the tassel band to be. Wrap the yarn around tightly. Next, thread the end through the loop and pull tightly to knot. Finally, use your sewing needle to hide the top strand inside the tassel.

This DIY can be translated to more than just pillow cushions. A classic way to introduce the tassel into your home is through a lampshade. You can create the same tactile element by following the steps above: attach the tassels to a strand of fabric with fabric tape, then attach the fabric to the lampshade. Tasseled curtains, drapery tie-backs, and pillowcase corners are also timeless ideas. 

However, a few more unique ideas have emerged this year. Some designers suggest homeowners add a single tassel to a lamp stem, below the lightbulb, for a more subtle look. Others encourage folks to add tassel details to interior doorknobs, vases, drawer pulls, or as a coffee table bookmark.

While tassels are a popular home design trend that we hope to keep seeing in 2026, they're not an ideal addition to every space. Those with pets, specifically cats, may find their furry companion appreciates the tassel details a little too much. Additionally, fringe and tassel details may require some careful consideration when cleaning. Avoid tugging or overworking the tassel pieces to better preserve them. You may also need to take extra care when vacuuming. However, with proper care and precautions, tassel details on furniture can be long-lasting.
