Measuring For Curtains Just Got Easier With These Tips From Martha Stewart

Choosing the right curtain length can be tricky, but Martha Stewart has wisdom to share. The queen of interiors has more than a few tips for choosing the right curtains for your space. However, her advice makes it clear that hanging and measuring your curtains is not a one-size-fits-all process. The right length depends entirely on the effect you're trying to create. The first step is to decide whether you want to create a crisp, functional look or if you prefer a dramatic effect that elongates your space.

Martha Stewart explains on her YouTube channel: "If you want to use a shade, you measure on the inside of the window frame. If you want to hang beautiful curtains and use a big rod with finial ends, you would measure from the outside of the frame, putting the hardware outside the window frame itself." You want the rod to be long enough that your window will be totally unobstructed when you push the curtains to the ends of the rod. Depending on the window's size and the thickness of the curtains, the rod should extend 4 to 12 inches out from the window's casing on both sides.

There is a difference between curtains and drapes. Stewart explains that drapes are typically longer than your basic curtains and should hang on each side of the window. She also says that drapes should always extend from just above the window to the ground. In another YouTube video, Martha explains that classic curtains, which are typically lighter than drapes, can float just above the floor.

Taking the right curtain measurements to complement your design goals

When it comes to the exact measurements, each style of curtain comes with a different set of rules. If floor-length drapery still isn't dramatic enough for your taste, go ultra-formal with puddle curtains that extend between 1-3 inches past the floor. This works best in living and dining areas. On the opposite side of the spectrum, you can create a rustic-casual look with apron curtains that only hang four inches below the bottom of the windowsill. This style is preferable for higher windows, such as those in your kitchen.

Another factor that will determine your curtain length is the height at which they are hung. Martha Stewart is one of many experts with tips on how high you should hang your curtains. She posted a video on her YouTube channel explaining that long curtains should be hung approximately 10 inches above the window's trim. For those with particularly high ceilings, you can use your crown molding as a guide and hang your curtains an inch or two underneath it. If you find yourself shopping for window treatments and you can't find the exact measurements to suit your space — always go a little longer!
