A bouquet of flowers adds color and life to the room, and, best of all, there are endless variations. That's why artistic people are sometimes drawn to floral arrangements. You can flex your creative muscle by combining different flowers, repurposing household items into beautiful vases, and even making small art pieces to tuck into the vase as well. For instance, you can turn a pack of plastic spoons into a translucent flower that will add a funky touch to your bouquet. All you need to do is melt your spoons with a lighter and mold them properly.
This project should only take about an hour or two and doesn't require any technical experience. As long as you can strike a lighter, you can complete this craft. Additional supplies include a pack of plastic spoons, a candle, a pair of gloves, a pair of snips, and a hot glue gun. Since melting plastic releases toxic fumes, it is crucial that you follow the appropriate safety precautions. You'll need to work in a well-ventilated space, preferably outdoors on a breezy day. Also wear a 3M P100 respirator with 3M 60921 vapor cartridges. This apparatus should remove any dangerous fumes from the air before it reaches your lungs. If the toxic fumes are a little too intimidating, there are plenty of other clever ways you can repurpose plastic silverware, including an adorable DIY vase and even a DIY candle holder.
The process of making flower decor out of plastic spoons
A TikTok account called @melodic_rose demonstrates how to carry out this hack. For each synthetic flower you'll need about 20 spoons. The scooping parts of your spoons can be crafted to imitate the curled edges of flower petals. Simply light your candle and hold your first spoon to it. As the plastic starts to melt, use your gloved fingers to shape it into the form of a flower petal. The spoons should darken with the heat, but the smoky appearance should add to the craft's aesthetic. Repeat this process about 20 times, but for the last spoon, heat the area where the scooping part meets the handle and bend it at a 90 degree angle. Snip off scoops of the remaining spoons and glue them using hot glue to craft the form of a flower. Make as many flowers as you feel your vase has room for.
To add a little extra style to this project, try using colorful spoons rather than clear ones. If you'd like to add this craft to your own vase of flowers, you can make a floral arrangement that looks high end using affordable Dollar Tree supplies, like straw baskets and a glass floral container. This project is a great way to recycle any single-use spoons you have in your kitchen, but, for environmental reasons, plastic silverware is a common kitchen item you should stop buying.
