Everyone loves a good thrift store run, and sometimes, we may even tend to buy things without a plan. Like that vintage teacup set you brought home, knowing full well you do not even drink tea and are now looking for ways to repurpose it around the house. If you happen to find an old quilt rack the next time you are thrifting, feel free to pick it up, whether you have a quilt collection or not. The rack can be turned into an adorable plant stand to show off your favorite plants and flowers.
This is a beginner-friendly DIY plant stand that only requires a few items. Besides the quilt rack itself, you'll also need one or two planters, depending on the size of the rack, along with attachments and plants or flowers. Once you put it all together, this plant stand can be placed in your garden space, yard, or patio as a unique way to display your plants. You can also use it to create a simple privacy wall for a deck or balcony. Or it can also double as decor indoors if you prefer to keep it inside.
How to repurpose a quilt rack as a plant stand
Start by wiping down the quilt rack. You can also sand and paint it, being sure to use outdoor paint if you plan to put the stand outside. Re-secure any parts of the rack that feel loose or unstable. Once the stand is ready, you can select and prep the planter boxes. You can use as many planters as there are horizontal bars on the rack. Windowbox planters, like these Plastic Rectangular Planters on Amazon, work well since they are designed for outdoor use and fit nicely on the rack. Measure the horizontal bars on the quilt rack to ensure the planters will fit within that width. If the planter boxes do not have drainage holes and your plants require them, drill a few holes in the bottom.
To attach the planters to the quilt rack bars, you can use brackets that fit the size and shape of the bars, like these Mounting Brackets for circular bars. Glue the brackets to the bars, then screw them into the planter once it is in place. Alternatively, you can use leather straps to create a hammock for the planter to sit on. Attach one side of the leather strap to the quilt rack bar and attach the other end of the strap to the bar across from it. Do this with two straps, spaced out wide enough to hold the planter. Place the planters securely onto the rack and insert your plants or flowers. Now you have a lovely plant stand ready to brighten up any space.
