Few things are worse than a kitchen utensil drawer jammed shut due to too many items being stuffed inside. It's a loud, frustrating, and time-consuming problem — particularly when all you are trying to do is grab your set of measuring cups to make dinner. If you're sick of dealing with this mess every time you cook or bake something, it's time to find a place to store measuring cups so they don't crowd up your drawer, such as the inside of a cabinet door. Then they're easy to locate and put away. You could secure the hooks directly to the door, but if you want a more flexible organizer, simply mount the hooks onto a piece of wood, then attach that to the cabinet door.

This DIY project is super affordable and requires surprisingly few tools and materials. Plus, it's easy to make renter-friendly. To create your measuring cup organizer, you will need a measuring tape, a level, a wooden board, a saw, sandpaper, wood stain or paint, a drill, small screw-in hooks, and removable adhesive wall strips. When choosing paints and stains, why not take the opportunity to attempt some unique kitchen color combinations? Making this project your own will help your organizer blend into your existing design aesthetic. Alternatively, make it look purpose-built with a hue that matches the finish on your cabinetry. Finally, pick up a pack of Mr. Pen Letters and Numbers Stencils to create neat labels for each measuring cup.

Creating a measuring cup organizer for the inside of a cabinet door

Before putting everything together, map out the configuration of the organizer. Measure your cabinet door to determine the maximum size of your organizer, and then play with different hook and measuring cup arrangements. Once you have settled on a layout, cut the wood board to size and sand it, focusing on any rough edges. Apply your paint or stain according to the manufacturer's directions, allow it to dry, and seal it with clear polyurethane — if needed, some paints and stains include a sealer.

Arrange your measuring cups on the board and mark the location of the hooks. Use your measuring tape and level to ensure they are evenly spaced before drilling pilot holes into the board and screwing the hooks into them. Finally, stencil on the labels for each measuring cup to make everything easy to organize. (You can also do this step before sealing the board with polyurethane.) Mount the organizer to the inside of the cabinet door using adhesive wall strips.

While you may instinctively gravitate toward a rectangular wooden board, there's no reason why you can't get creative with other shapes. Anything from an oval to a flower could work, as long as it fits the cabinet door and accommodates all your cups. Don't stop at cups, either. Take a leaf from Martha Stewart's top tips for a more organized kitchen and make room to hang measuring spoons, stencil on a measurement conversion chart, or add decorative touches.
