The Biggest Mistake You're Making When Laying Corner Tiles Is Completely Preventable

The process of laying down tiles for a perfect tile floor installation must be an intricate one. Measurements and placement need to be exact in order for the full installation to look uniform and to ensure the tile performs at its best. The installation typically starts in the middle of the floor, where tiles are laid out side by side with spacers to allow for enough grout to fit equally between each one to bond them. But once the end of each row is reached, navigating stubborn corners can be a challenge. Most overlook how the corners of a tile installation require their own specific details, including spacing that differs from the rest of the floor.

The corners of the installation as well as sides along each wall will require extra fastening to make sure the tiles are securely attached with strength. It is up to the installer to leave the right amount of space between the wall and the tile so an appropriate amount of caulk can be applied for sealing. Approximately 1/4 of an inch of space should be left vacant between the tile and the wall or corner. Easily use a caulking gun to properly seal the joints of each corner and against the walls to ensure that the floor tile installation is tight and sound.

The corners in a tile installation are often the last pieces installed to assure that the overall visual of the floor design looks symmetrical. This is one of the many reasons that securing tile along the corners and sides of the room is of the utmost importance and demands extra attention. Rather than grout, which bonds tiles together, caulk is required for the corners and sides of a full tile floor installation. It fills the joints between the floor and wall and is flexible — allowing for movement if the house settles, for example. Caulk is also waterproof, which will protect the floor installation from moisture damage. 

Leaving the right amount of space for caulk will also contribute to the overall appearance of the tile installation. It will provide a border around the corners and edges of the room that will feel intentional and create a cozy feel. Similar to how grout lines impact the design and look of the floor, a thick line of caulk can make a design statement, especially when paired with a dark tile color for contrast.
