No More Uncomfortable Homes: The Trend Saying Goodbye To Perfection And Hello To Comfort

For a while, it felt like homes were meant to be a sterile environment, more for show than for living. Even rooms guests rarely visited, such as bedrooms, had to look perfect. Items on the counter or personal elements were stored away so all surfaces stayed clean and empty. While it certainly made a home feel open and tidy, it led to a cold and bland environment.

Thankfully, it seems this trend is fading away, replaced with comfortable homes that look lived in and are practical. "We're moving away from cold, over-sanitized spaces defined by smooth, glossy surfaces and 'perfect' finishes," said designer Sarah Akbary of Sarah Akbary Interiors when talking to Better Homes and Gardens. "The new language is warmth, imperfection, and tactility—medium-toned woods, limewashed plaster, unlacquered metals, layered textiles."

In 2026, home trends are about making a space yours. A little mess and a sense of being lived in are ideal, along with items that are comfortable. This is showing up in several different ways. Homes are meant to look messy, decorative-only items are being reduced, and fun mixes of colors and textures are coming back. For example, while neutrals still appear in the 2026 official paint colors of the year, there are also additions of more bold and sensual shades, including rich reds, teals, and greens. It's a pretty big change for home decor, but one sure to breathe some life back into your space.

How to take the first step to add comfort to your home

The best way to start adding a sensual and comfortable feel to your home is to take it slow. Is there a particular piece of furniture you've been looking to change out or that feels too bland? Replace it with something you enjoy more, like a color or texture you love, but wouldn't have picked for your house before. You can also look at some of the best ways to decorate your home for a warm and inviting vibe. Sometimes, you can make small changes, like going for warmer lights, and you don't have to give up your neutrals just yet.

This movement also includes the up-and-coming home material trend that embraces comfort and authenticity, which features sustainable and handmade materials. These decor options allow for more personal touches as well. You could also pick items with a history, such as trinkets handed down from generation to generation in the family, or something that has meaning to you.

Textures also play a big role. When you can, try to do most of your shopping in person so you can understand how the material feels. Mixing and matching materials and textures like fun wallpaper, wood, living plants, and metals into a space adds a sense of personality and chaos that is popular in 2026.

And most importantly, don't be afraid to mess up a little. Imperfection and clutter are part of the trend.
