Say Goodbye To Boring Storage Bins With This Budget-Friendly DIY

If you've purchased the cheaper fabric collapsible bins for storage, you may have enjoyed them for a while but eventually found them to be boring. These containers are an excellent solution for decluttering and can be very organizing-friendly, but they just aren't that pretty to look at. The good news is that you don't have to settle for them as they come. There is a way to upgrade your storage cubes with an affordable hack. With just a few materials and a little bit of creativity, as @dmorahd on TikTok demonstrates, you can transform those fabric bins into a more chic, custom storage solution with an easy DIY that yields a modern, textured front concealing and upgrading the original look of your bins. It looks unique and, dare we say, more expensive!

You'll need to acquire some materials to complete the new look. Starting with wooden boards, look for lightweight sheets to cover the front. Plywood is much lighter and less expensive than regular wood, so it's perfect for this upgrade project. You could also use scrap wood if you have it for repurposing to do this project. You'll also need to get a square fabric piece that fits over the board of your choice. Then, get yourself some of this PerkHomy Natural Jute Twine, your hot glue gun, and Gorilla Glue.

The steps to take for upgraded-looking storage bins

First, measure into the center on all sides of the boards to create a smaller square right in the middle. Cut the square out on the wood piece as well as on your fabric square that fits over the front. Hot glue the fabric piece to the plywood. Next, take your twine and hold a small piece to the inside corner of your square, hot glue it, and then take it to the opposite corner. Do it on all sides of the twine on the inside, then pull them through the square to the outside, gluing them to the corners. Cut more twine to frame the square in the middle, and glue it.

Next, take your twine and fit it in rows all across the front above and below your smaller square to create that textured fabric look. Use your hot glue to put it in place. Take pieces of twine and glue them on the inside on the left and right of the square to pull through and spread out diagonally to the corners, incorporating additional twine to glue down. The diagonal twine gives it a textured appearance and breaks up the straight rows on the top and bottom.

Once you're satisfied with the twine covering, cut the same-sized square from your board and fabric piece in your fabric bin. Then, attach your plywood board to the front of your bin with Gorilla Glue. The result feels both elegant and stylish. Get creative with this DIY using other materials, like contact paper instead of fabric or ribbon instead of twine, to make a different outer texture.
