The Kitchen Color Combo That Is Sucking The Life Out Of Your Space
All great color combinations in interior design eventually run their course. As timeless as we may believe they are, sooner or later, they lose their luster and give way to fresher color schemes. Speaking exclusively with House Digest, Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand, announced the death of one classic kitchen color combo. "We've turned the page on white and gray," Pierce declared. "Bright white or gray cabinetry, particularly when combined with white tiles, can make a space feel sterile," she explained. Instead, she said, "Homeowners today are craving natural, organic warmth and more layered color stories."
This death sentence doesn't just come from Pierce's opinion; the numbers show this combo's loss in popularity. "For the first time in nine years," Pierce revealed, "the desire for white finishes fell in our survey of kitchen designers, and gray continued its downward trajectory. The all-white and all-gray kitchen eras are out as homeowners today seek to create more customized, layered kitchens."
Pierce elaborated on one factor that led to the decline of white and gray kitchens. "From a practicality standpoint, while bright white can initially appear clean, it is also hard to maintain, particularly for lower cabinets in high use kitchens." According to Pierce, without exploring ways to refresh your kitchen by adding texture, these all-white spaces also frequently read as sterile and flat. "White can make a space feel larger and brighter, but without the balance of texture or layering, it can feel stark and unfinished," she shared.
A page has turned on gray and white kitchens, our expert says
What can you do if you love your gray and white kitchen or can't afford to refresh it? In her exclusive conversation with House Digest, Pierce emphasized the importance of balance. "For homeowners that want a white or grey kitchen, the key is to strategically introduce warmth and depth to make the space feel inviting. A stained wood island is a beautiful way to help anchor a space," she shared. For further personalization, Pierce recommended bringing in organic textures: "think vibrant plants, stoneware, or soft textiles like patterned hand towels," she suggested. You can also consider unique kitchen color combinations to try in the future.
If you're ready to make a color change, start with cabinets, Pierce advised. "Home is a deeply personal space and your cabinetry should reflect how you live and how you want your space to feel," she said, noting that cabinets set the tone for the entire room and are a long-term investment, unlike paint or decor, which can be easily swapped out. Consider our curated list of the best color combos for two tone kitchen cabinets. "Thoughtfully choose cabinetry stains or colors with depth, warmth, and longevity in mind," Pierce concluded.
