How Erin Napier Upcycled An Old Plant Pot Into Chic Wall Decor
Erin Napier is mostly known for her signature grandmillennial and cottagecore aesthetics, both of which center on the combination of old-school and modern designs. Hence, it should not come as a surprise that the HGTV star likes doing home projects that combine old and modern elements. Like, who can forget that time she transformed an old mantel into a decor piece for the fireplace? Now, another interesting DIY she has shared that's worthy of attention is the floating plant pot. Basically, it is an old plant pot that has been upcycled into chic stone planter wall decor.
Napier shared this DIY project when she and her husband, Ben, appeared on "Today with Jenna & Sheinelle" to promote their HGTV show "Home Town Takeover" ahead of its Season 3 premiere. During the segment, the couple presented several DIY hacks that made it onto their show, and one of them was the floating planter. Explaining how it's created, Napier showed the step-by-step process of turning a cheap plastic plant pot into a faux concrete planter using spackling compound and paint, before hanging it on the wall with a metallic planter frame. The result is a gorgeous, lightweight planter that looks like an authentic stone pot floating beside the wall.

The first step to turn the plastic pot into a convincing faux concrete planter is to sand it so the spackle sticks. Erin Napier then used DryDex Spackling to coat the plastic pot. The fast-drying, putty-like compound is typically used to fix holes, dents, and cracks in drywall, plaster, or wood. According to Napier, when applying the paste, there's no need for it to be perfectly smooth since the goal is to make the plastic pot look and feel like real stone. Once the spackling compound has dried, the next step is to coat the pot with paint. She suggested mixing the paint with the spackling paste before applying it to the pot's exterior for a faster turnaround time, but also admitted that she always applies the spackle and paint separately. Finally, transfer the plant into the finished pot and place it onto a wall-mounted planter frame.
If you have vertical space that needs some decorating, this project is one of the easiest you can do. Just follow Napier's DIY hack for upcycling old planters and grab some floating frames or shelves from Amazon. Sbosbo's Floating Shelves and Bamworld's Wall Decor Plant Stands are worth considering for your planters' wall mount. This DIY is also a great way to upcycle pots into designer-inspired planters at a low cost. You can even use old bowls too. Plus, it's a simple, affordable way to decorate your home like Napier.
