Can't Find A Place For Your Old Rug? Try This Space-Saving Storage Idea
Tiny living is having a moment. In some larger cities, a significant share of new apartment construction is micro-sized. These spaces are typically 200-500 square feet. And while in places like Seattle, where only about 12% of all apartments are tiny, a full 66% of the city's rental apartments under construction in 2025 were "undersized," per Yardi Matrix data (via Storage Cafe).
Many other cities are following a similar path. People embrace Lilliputian-sized abodes because of their affordability, access to career opportunities, and ease of keeping clean. The downside? Small annoyances, like finding storage space for that good ol' area rug, are a thorn in the side of many fun-sized home-dwellers. At times like these, it's good to get up off the couch and look under the cushions: A perfect hiding spot for that rug can be found there as TikToker @ivangellys demonstrated on her feed.
Although it seems like a somewhat quirky place to stash this decorative accent, it actually makes a lot of sense. Because items like rugs are flat and can be folded, they'll fit in locations that other, less pliable items won't. And putting the rug under the cushions allows you to keep small items organized without hogging space that could be used for bulkier items.
Things to keep in mind if you store your rug in the couch cushions
If you pursue this living room storage idea, do consider a couple of things before you tuck your rug under the sofa pillows. First, give the old rug a good vacuuming and possibly wash the rug before putting it away. This removes any cracker crumbs and bits of garden dirt that could break down the rug's fibers. Leftover chunks of food can also attract insects — something you don't want in the place where you sit. It's also critical that you allow the rug to dry. This reduces the likelihood of mold and mildew developing.
When you do finally fold the rug up, take care to smooth out all of the wrinkles. It needs to lie as flat as possible so that the cushions can sit on top of it without looking lumpy. Additionally, try to tuck the edges of it into the recesses of the couch if the construction of the sofa allows for that. This keeps the rug out of sight while it hibernates in the couch.
Finally, it's best to consider this a short-term storage option — like when you're using the spot on the floor for yoga and need to move the rug out of the way. Folding a rug for long periods of time may leave permanent creases in it. And some backing materials may break down if they're bent for a long while. Therefore, if rolling it up and hiding the rug under the couch (instead of inside it) is an option, do that.
