Companion Plants That Grow Beautifully Alongside Star Jasmine

Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is a pretty, fragrant perennial vine native to Japan and China. A summer-blooming plant, star jasmine is a twining vine that likes to grow over things like fences and delights the eyes with tiny clusters of pin wheel-shaped flowers. While you can grow this fresh-smelling vine for added privacy along a backyard fence, star jasmine also makes a popular option for ground cover. Because of its rapid, sometimes aggressive growth, it might be difficult to imagine the type of plants that work best as companions to star jasmine, but many are up to the task. Just be careful to pick companions that will not be overwhelmed by this strong vining plant, but will also complement its twining character and white flowers.

Star jasmine grows well in the USDA Hardiness Zones 8 through 10, so select companions that work well in the same climate, or plan to overwinter them inside. Consider bold species such as red-tip photinia (Photinia x fraseri), prairie rose (Rosa virginiana), and passion flower (Passiflora incarnata). These plants have similar growing requirements to star jasmine and will look beautiful alongside it in your yard.

How to create a lovely landscape next to your star jasmine

Focusing just on hardiness zones, you can see how well some plants will go together. Red-tip photinia grows well in hardiness zones 7 and 8, prairie rose grows well in hardiness zones 4 through 8, and passion flower grows well in hardiness zones 5 through 9. Altogether, these different species can thrive nicely in the same areas of the south where star jasmine is popular. All spring or summer-blooming perennials, this collection of plants also combines several important characteristics, including attracting pollinators, creating privacy, and providing food for wildlife.

Photinia is an evergreen shrub that will brighten up your yard throughout the entire year, and will grow tall near your star jasmine with a matching, rapid growth rate. The accent of the red leaves will stand out from the white flowers of the star jasmine. Plus, the pungent smell of the photinia may be offset by the strong fragrance of star jasmine. Prairie roses can also add privacy to your backyard with a flowering shrub that birds love, similar to star jasmine. These two plants, when grown near each other, can create a beautiful mix of white and pink flowers. Passion flower is another fast-growing vine that enjoys full sun like star jasmine. Both plants like to climb up fences and other supports and require similar maintenance. Thanks to each of these species' rapid growth rates, you can worry less about one overtaking the star jasmine or being overtaken in turn.
