If your dream garden is bigger than you have space for and you're up to your knees in flowers, it might be time to expand upward. Utilizing vertical space is a creative way to keep your garden growing, even when the horizontal limits have been reached. Hanging planters that hold multiple plants are your best friend for maximizing space, but they can be pricey. Fortunately, you can make the cutest hanging planters with this easy DIY that's perfect for beginners and wallet-friendly. This hack turns Dollar Tree stackable planters into a gorgeous hanging garden.
We're simply going to attach a pot chain to the stackable planter and hang it using the attached S-hook. This hack works for hanging planters that can be used indoors or outdoors, so you can expand your garden space wherever you are. The Garden Collection 3-Section Stackable Planter and Garden Collection Planter Pot Chain required for this project are both available from Dollar Tree for $1.50 each, making the basic project only $3. Additional costs come from optional supplies like spray paint, adhesive glue, or a drill if you don't already have one.
If you need a place to hang your planter, you can use something like this Indoor Planter Stand from the Chloraeon Store or an Outdoor Shepherd Hook. Alternatively, you can opt for a hook bracket that mounts on a wall. There is also an option to make this a two-tier hanging basket, which requires two of the Dollar Tree stackable planters.
How to hang Dollar Tree's stackable planters with pot chain
Dollar Tree's stackable planters come in green, cream, or terracotta. If you want to paint your planter, do that first by taking it outside or to a well-ventilated area, then spray-painting it with indoor/outdoor spray paint. Once it's dry, drill three holes, one on the outer lip of each potted section. The three pot chains will attach here, one to each hole. Alternatively, you can remove the small clips at the end of the pot chain and glue the hooked end of each chain to the section of the pot where you would otherwise have drilled a hole, using multi-purpose adhesive.
The pot chain is long enough to accommodate two stackable planters. You can double your planting space by stacking a second planter on top of the first, turning it so the pots do not cover the ones underneath. Then you can lift the whole thing by the adjoining S-hook and hang it. Repeat the entire process to make as many hanging planters as you'd like. Use an indoor stand to display your new hanging planter if you'll keep it indoors. If you're worried about the planters dripping onto your floors, you can DIY a stylish planter drip tray with a few simple, affordable items. For outdoor plants, you can use an outdoor shepherd's hook pole to stake in the yard, or give an old fence new life with a stylish hanging planter DIY by attaching a hook bracket to display it outside.
