Why Property Brothers' Drew Scott Prefers An Undermount Sink Over Other Designs
Drew Scott is widely known as one-half of the twin duo on HGTV's show "Property Brothers." For well over a decade, the Scott twins have made a name for themselves renovating fixer-upper homes for families. So it makes sense that when Scott gave some advice on an Instagram post, stating, "An undermount sink just makes life easy," people paid attention. The biggest takeaway from his Instagram Reel was that undermount sinks are much easier to keep clean. Scott also noted it's not just useful in the kitchen — an undermount sink can make bathroom cleaning easier, too.
Many homeowners might agree with Scott that an undermount sink makes countertop cleanup easier. With an undermount sink, the bowl is mounted under the countertop, creating a flush edge where dirt and grime can't easily accumulate. By contrast, a drop-in sink is installed from above, with the edge overlapping the countertop. Not only does an undermount provide easier cleanup than a traditional drop-in, but it also frees up countertop space, and many believe it creates a higher-end look, which can add value to your home.
Advantages of an undermount sink design
Beyond easier cleanup in both kitchens and bathrooms, undermount sinks also create a cleaner look. It makes it easier, especially in the kitchen, to create room for different sink attachments. Scott mentions additions behind the sink, like a sprayer, dishwasher vent, drinking water spout, or even luxurious cleaning upgrades. An undermounted sink frees up this space between the sink and the wall. Being able to wipe down counters and easily push debris and gunk into the sink without worrying about it catching on a sink ledge is an awesome bonus.
Additionally, the ability to clean behind the faucet is another advantage that undermount sinks have over drop-in styles. Often, in a bathroom, there is little to no space between the sink and the wall, making it harder to get that space really clean.
The undermount sink creates a seamless look that many homeowners feel is more high-end. Adding to that high-end look is the fact that until recently, most undermount sinks needed to be installed with countertops made of quartz, natural stone, or other more expensive options. While that was true for many years, recent advances in laminate technology have made it possible to have an undermount sink with a laminate countertop. This is great news for those of us who want the advantages of an undermount-style sink but are on a tighter budget. While it is true that traditional undermount sinks typically cost about $200 to $300 more than drop-in styles, the benefits might be worth it to many homeowners.
