Everyone has been there: mid-recipe, needing to wipe your hands on the kitchen towel hanging from the oven door, only to realize it has fallen on the floor. Now, you have to interrupt what you're doing, toss it in the laundry, and take a new kitchen towel out, all while your hands remain dirty or wet. Whether it's gravity, a curious pet, or a child walking by, there are plenty of reasons why a kitchen towel might fall off the oven's handle. But the solution to prevent this is beyond simple: add a few snap buttons to your towels to prevent them from falling off.
This problem is so common, you probably wish you'd thought of it earlier. For this brilliant idea, you'll attach the parts of the snap buttons to the ends of a kitchen towel and secure the snaps after putting the towel on the oven handle. This essentially turns the towel into a circular, tube-like piece of fabric, so it won't slide off, no matter how hectic your house or recipe gets.
To do this, you'll need some specific crafting supplies. Namely, you'll need to get a Bolsdoic snap button kit with fastener pliers or something similar. This shouldn't cost much more than $10, and you can use them for tons of other DIYs. For example, you can keep your bathroom towels from falling by adding snap buttons to those, too. You can also use them to restore old clothes that are missing buttons or to upcycle secondhand pieces that are ill-fitting.
How to use snap buttons on towels
Start by looking at how you typically hang your towels onto the oven handle. This may sound obvious, but some people prefer to hang them flat, while others might fold them once lengthwise first, and then drape them onto the over door handle. You'll want to add the snap buttons where the two ends of the towel touch, in one corner of the towel. To make your life easier, you can use a washable fabric marker to mark exactly where each side of the snap should go.
The snap buttons have two sides, much like an outlet: a "male" and a "female" one — you'll need one of each. Use the pliers, and add the snaps where you've marked the fabric. This shouldn't require excessive strength, and the pliers should be enough to secure the sides in place. But be careful: each side is made of two pieces, one that's the backing, and one that's the button snapping side. For this DIY to work, you need to attach the snap buttons to the towel so that the male and female pieces meet when the towel is folded over the oven handle.
Now, place the towel onto the oven bar, snap the ends in place, and you're done. If you need to take the towel off to wash it, wipe a counter, or grab a hot plate, simply pull the snaps apart for it to come undone. The best part is that you can use this hack with even your best kitchen towels that are cute, since the snaps won't be visible at all. You can also do this with hand towels for the bathroom or if you're keeping your kitchen towels organized with an in-cabinet storage solution, like a slide-out towel bar.
