To maintain healthy plumage, birds need to take a bath every now and then. They're attracted to running water, which is one of the pros of having a fountain in your birdbath. To draw hummingbirds to a water fountain, Robbie from the YouTube channel Robbie and Gary Gardening Easy made hers colorful, which is another feature that hummingbirds can't resist. Since pop-it toys are made from silicone and designed to be safe for children, they're also safe for hummingbirds, and the rainbow colors of this DIY fountain will have them splashing around in no time.

If you've been thinking about getting a water feature for hummingbirds, you'll find this one is easy and inexpensive to make. To whip up this fountain, start with a small tub or dish pan and an Easter basket from Dollar Tree. The Rainbow Round 'Pop It' Toy that Robbie used is available from Amazon right now for about $6, and you'll also need a USB Water Pump for the fountain, which costs another $7. You could also substitute that for a solar panel kit. To carry the water from the tub to the pop-it bath, Robbie uses a jumbo straw, but any tube that fits will do the trick. All of the parts are durable and easy to clean.

Assemble your own rainbow-colored hummingbird water fountain and birdbath

Once you have the materials ready to build this hummingbird water fountain and birdbath combo, start by removing the handle of the basket. Place it upside down in the tub and drill or cut a hole in the center of it to fit the jumbo straw through. You'll also have to cut a hole in the silicone pop-it, which you can do with a sharp knife or hot soldering iron. Then, after you insert the straw up through the basket and into the pop-it toy, thread the tubing that came with the pump up from the bottom. Place the pump in the tub underneath the basket and connect one end of the tubing to it. Next, fill the tub with water and turn the pump on, then watch as the water bubbles up into the rainbow pop-it toy. When you're sure everything is in place, you can trim any excess tubing.

Place the fountain in a sheltered area near some flowers or a hummingbird feeder, and you may be as surprised as Robbie was to find out how quickly they come to check it out. Although there's plenty of color in this backyard hummingbird paradise, Robbie adds a few floating toys, such as rubber ducks and plastic eggs, just for fun. You can make this your own by using thrift store or yard sale finds for the pan and basket, and if you're still feeling creative, you can begin DIYing your own hummingbird feeder to match.
