Upcycle Plastic Nursery Pots Into The Cutest Planter For Succulents
If you have a bunch of plastic pots lying around — especially those cute mini ones — there's a great way for you to upcycle them into a tiered succulent planter that will look gorgeous inside the home or out on the patio. It's important to find creative ways to reuse plastic nursery pots in your garden or home because most of them aren't actually accepted by residential recycling programs, which means a great deal of them end up in the landfill. So not only will you have a beautiful succulent arrangement with this DIY, but you can also feel good about doing something helpful for the environment.
With that in mind, let's gather our supplies. You'll need one medium-sized pot to serve as the base and 10 mini pots. If you don't have that many, you can do an alternative version with only three mini pots. For the alternate version, you have the option to include one large pot in addition to the medium-sized pot as well. It's flexible, so use what you have. You'll also need a 12-inch wooden rod that will function as the spine of the piece, holding it all together. Optionally, you can use a screwdriver with 10 screws, and an awl or drill to put a hole in each small pot's rim. Finally, you'll need potting soil and succulents to fill each pot. If you're nervous about working with succulents, you can learn how to repot your succulents like a pro with these helpful tips.
How to upcycle nursery pots into a tiered succulent planter
If you are using 10 mini pots and one medium-sized pot, begin by making a hole just below the rim of each of the mini pots. Measure the height of the medium pot and mark that on the wooden rod, so you know not to place any mini pots below it. Then screw one mini pot to the rod at a time, beginning with four pots all the way around the rod at the same level. Attach three mini pots to the rod above that, making sure they are not aligned right on top of each other, but shifted over enough to not cover each other up. You should have room for one more level of three mini pots on the rod. Secure the bottom of the rod to the medium pot by screwing it into the bottom. Fill the large pot with soil to help stabilize the rod, using a pre-made mix, or DIY your own succulent soil mix by combining either coarse sand or perlite with peat moss, in equal measure.

Alternatively, you can begin by filling a large pot with potting soil and snuggling a medium-sized pot into that soil (as pictured above). Slide a wooden rod through the drainage hole of the medium pot down into the soil of the large pot. Add potting mix to the medium container, then slide a mini pot onto the rod through a drainage hole. Repeat with as many mini pots as will fit on the rod, alternating each pot to one side and then the other so they are not directly on top of each other. Fill each pot with soil and succulents.
