DIY Simple Dollar Tree Items Into A Wall Light That Looks So High End

If you're searching for a way to add an eye-catching, high-end touch to hanging photographs or artwork, there's no better way than bathing them in a soft glow. Gallery-style linear wall lamps can cost hundreds, but with just a few Dollar Tree supplies and a dose of creativity, it's possible to craft your own pair for under $10.

As one DIYer showed off on TikTok, this inexpensive hack to light up wall art is an easy and simple way to create a sleek fixture that looks way more expensive than it is. Start with a Dollar Tree run to pick up two small wooden crates ($1.25 each), two heavy duty metal hooks ($1.50 each), four wood dowels ($1.25 for a two-pack), and a pack of LED string lights ($1.25).

Depending on your decor, you can spray paint the dowels and crates black to match the metal hooks or coat all three items in a bold metallic finish to really embrace the gallery aesthetic. Alternatively, go for a bright pop of color that will make your DIY picture lights a real talking point. Once dry, create the lamp's base by flipping over a crate and placing a hook in its center. Mark one of its nail holes with a pencil, drill a hole through, then string the lights through the opening, hot glueing their battery pack inside the crate. Now, it's time to craft the main portion of your light fixture.

How to turn Dollar Tree essentials into gallery-worthy lighting

Once the battery pack is attached inside the crate, pull the string lights through the hole, which you used to mark the crate. Center the hook and hot glue it to the crate's bottom. Next, superglue a dowel to each flat side of the metal hook, creating a slim bar or rod which the string lights will run along.

Pull the string lights through the crate, attaching them to the dowel with a few dollops of hot glue, loop back, and run them to the opposite end. Loop back once more, gluing along the way, then push the remaining length through the hole in the crate to hide the end alongside the battery back. Small pieces of black tape can help secure the lights further or, alternatively, you could simply wrap them around the dowel for a more rustic look.

Affix picture-hanging hardware to the back of the crate, and it's ready to hang either vertically or horizontally alongside your favorite art and photos. If you'd rather not make holes in the wall, a clever hack for hanging that doesn't require any tools is to use self-adhesive magnets instead.

If you're still feeling crafty, consider mixing and matching DIY designs by turning other Dollar Tree items into sleek, modern wall lights, like a wood box and plank board paired with LED lights.
