Not LG, Not Samsung: Consumer Reports Says This Appliance Brand Is More Reliable
When you're looking for a new appliance, chances are you're going to start with the brands most familiar to you, like LG, GE, and Samsung. However, according to a survey carried out by Consumer Reports in late 2025, these brands might not be the best ones out there. In this survey, the top spot went to a company that may not be as familiar. Gaggenau Hausgeräte — more commonly known as Gaggenau — was number one when it came to appliance reliability.
Gaggenau isn't a new company by any means, however, as it dates back to 1683 in Germany. While there are benefits to buying American-made appliances, this company goes to show that it's also sometimes worth broadening your horizons. Gaggenau is considered a luxury brand, making high-end appliances like coffee makers, dishwashers, wine cabinets, and washing machines. Consumer Reports only included Gaggenau in its surveys starting in 2024, when it tied in second place alongside LG and Wolf.
Keep in mind that this report only measured reliability, and not factors like performance or added features. If you want to find the must-have appliances that add a touch of luxury to your home, this particular report will simply tell you which ones continue working after a few years – but it gives little indication whether they're useful or practical. And while Gaggenau is a strong company when it comes to appliances, it may help to do some more research to determine whether it's the right fit for you.
Why you may want to do a little more research before buying Gaggenau
Although Gaggenau is the top-rated brand for reliability according to Consumer Reports, that position doesn't come without cost. One of its dishwashers — the 400 series – costs nearly $4,000 brand new. But a lot of customers seem to find these prices worth it in the long run. After all, Gaggenau appliances should require little to no maintenance and last for a long time, with some easily making it to 20 years.
It's worth noting that, while this company is considered the most reliable, it isn't the only one you should consider. It beat out LG by just one point, after all, and only three product categories were considered in total. If you're looking for something outside those two brands, it may be worth doing some further research, as companies can sometimes be good at making one appliance but fall flat elsewhere. For example, LG might not beat out Gaggenau when it comes to dishwashers, but they do have microwaves that score much better than average compared to other companies.
Consumer Reports' reliability rankings are based on surveys of thousands of people, focusing on how well the appliances held up and how often they broke over several years. While it does give you a few great brands to check out, it also tells you which unreliable appliance brands to avoid at all costs.
