No Green Thumb? You Can DIY The Cutest Snake Plant That Looks Just Like The Real Thing
There are many benefits that come with surrounding yourself with greenery. Taking time to walk around and smell the roses can relax a busy mind, promote physical activity, and decrease negative emotions such as anger. Finding the time to take a leisurely stroll through nearby gardens or parks, however, can be difficult in today's hectic world. While it may not be as physically beneficial as a walk through a park, adding greenery to your desk, working, or living space can increase productivity, reduce stress levels, and brighten a work space. For those who lack a green thumb, the idea of taking care of a plant may seem daunting, and you should avoid growing snake plants unless you're ready for downsides like toxicity. Real snake plants are also notoriously slow growers and are prone to falling over if they become too top-heavy. Luckily, you can create unkillable plants for your home with the help of a few crafting materials. Among the many unkillable plant species you can craft is a mini snake plant that practically looks just like the real thing.
To have your own pocket-sized snake plant without the hassle of growing snake plants for real, all you'll need are some small containers to create a pot or vase for your faux plant, masking tape, floral wire, and paint. If you want to go green with your DIY greenery, you can recycle and repurpose used food or condiment containers. Depending on how big you want your snake plant to be, you can repurpose yogurt containers, mini jelly cups, or even condiment jars to create the vessel for your DIY plant.
How to make your faux snake plant
Start by picking a receptacle for your small-scaled snake plant. If you're recycling or repurposing a food container, thoroughly empty, rinse, and dry the container prior to crafting. Once completely dry, you can opt to paint the vase a color or pattern of your choosing. Alternatively, you can decorate what will be your plant pot with fabric, gift wrapping paper (something like the Kraft Floral Wrapping Paper Roll from Wrapaholic is particularly fitting), or stickers to make it truly one-of-a-kind. When the base of your plant is completely decorated and dried, set it aside to start creating your low-maintenance, evergreen, unkillable snake plant.
For the plant itself, you'll need floral wire, masking tape, scissors, and paint. You could also use markers or alternative coloring mediums to add color to your plant. Cut the floral wire to a desired length for your snake plant's leaves. Then cut your masking tape into strips. On one strip, place your wire down the middle of the sticky side to form the vein of the leaf. Place the other strip on top of it to sandwich the wire. Trim the leaf of your snake plant to the desired shape, width, and length. Trim any excess wire, too, but make sure you leave enough to be able to stick it into your crafted pot.
After trimming, paint and color your snake plant's leaves. Use varying shades of green and add accent colors to make it more realistic. Allow the color to dry completely. Once dried, twist and bend your leaf until you're happy with how it tilts. To "pot" your snake plant, fill your plant pot with foam or faux soil and stick the wired ends of the leaves into them, filling it with enough to complete your cute, DIY plant.
