Turn Empty Yogurt Cups Into Beautiful Baskets That Look So Chic

If you've been getting rid of empty yogurt cups without a second thought, you might want to press pause before throwing them into your recycling bin. It's easy to overlook these scraps, but with a little innovation, they can become something useful. There are countless ways to repurpose yogurt containers around the home and garden, like food storage or the fun gardening hack of starting seeds in yogurt cups. But you can also transform them into something beautiful.

Inspired by Instagram creator @cameliadiycraft, this project gives a major makeover to basic yogurt cups, turning them into jute rope baskets that look surprisingly chic. Using two small empty containers to make a base, you just use hot glue to wrap jute rope around the plastic, with a couple finishing touches. The end result is a stunning rustic basket that fits right in with boho, farmhouse, modern organic spaces, and the like.

To try it yourself, you'll only need a few basic supplies: two small empty yogurt cups, a hot glue gun, a box cutter, and jute rope like PerkHomy's. No sewing or special tools required. With just a little creativity and a bit of your time, you can turn everyday waste into lovely decor.

How to upcycle empty yogurt cups into a chic basket

First, carefully cut out the bottom of one yogurt cup using a box cutter. Then, apply a line of hot glue along the top rim and attach it to the top rim of the other container. Press lightly and hold briefly to secure them together. Once set, flip the piece over so the bottom faces upward. Add a ring of glue to the base and begin attaching your jute rope, coiling it tightly as you go. Continue gluing and wrapping the rope around the entire plastic surface, working your way up until it's fully covered. When you reach the end, trim the rope and glue the end neatly in place. Next, cut two pieces of rope of equal length and attach them to opposite sides to create handles.

To elevate the look, glue a strip of lace ribbon around the middle where the two cups meet. Alternatively, you can use any other kind of ribbon, or fashion it into a bow. You don't have to stop there. This is where you have the opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Think faux florals, pearls, beads, or other embellishments for extra flair. Consider personalizing it, like @cameliadiycraft, using something similar to LIUBAI custom leather tags.

A big part of this craft's charm is how adaptable it is. You can use it as a mini planter for faux plants, flowers, or succulents. Or it can be stylish storage for pens, makeup brushes, eyeliners, lipsticks, lipglosses, or even small bathroom essentials. And if all you've got are 32-ounce yogurt cups lying around, use just one of those instead of two small cups. Need something sturdier and bigger? With two 32-ounce containers and a few other odds and ends, you can turn yogurt containers into a useful DIY storage basket.
