The Quick & Affordable Hack That Makes Kitchen Cabinets Look Custom

Clean, minimalistic kitchens are popular for good reason. They always feel fresh, open, and tidy, but they can also look a bit boring, especially when there's a wall of plain cabinets. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to upgrade a boring builder-grade kitchen for a fresh look, including renter-friendly options. One incredibly simple yet impactful design upgrade involves placing black circle stickers onto kitchen cabinet doors to mimic a vent hole.

Decorative ventilation is truly the centuries-old kitchen cabinet feature that deserves a comeback. It adds a bit of character and visual interest to the space, often having unique shapes and patterns. They also serve the functional purpose of preventing moisture buildup that can lead to damage or mold. Unfortunately, cutting patterned holes in cabinet doors isn't always easy, and it is permanent. This is where the sticker hack comes in.

By strategically applying stickers to your cabinet doors, you can make it look as if they are vented without tools or changing out cabinet doors. You can also remove the stickers when your lease ends or have the desire to try out different designs and placements over time. You won't get the real ventilation benefits, but you will get the stylistic ones. To try out this hack, all you need are some stickers in black or a dark color, measuring tape, and a pair of scissors to adjust the size and shape of the stickers, if preferred. You may also want detergent and a rag for cleaning and a straight-edge object to smooth out any bubbles.

How to place the stickers for the best results

When choosing stickers, be sure to look for matte options rather than shiny ones to achieve the illusion of it being a shadowed hole rather than a glossy sticker that reflects light. Solid black, dark gray, and maybe even a dark brown could all work, depending on your cabinet color and kitchen light level. Look for shadows on your kitchen cabinets to figure out what shade will be best. When you're ready to shop, you'll also need to consider shape. Some popular designs feature teardrop, oval, diamond, circle, or square shapes. Others have longer lines. Often, they are arranged in groups of four in a diamond shape near the top of the cabinet, but you can place them however you choose.

When you're ready to apply the stickers, be sure to clean the cabinet surface thoroughly with detergent to ensure proper adhesion. Use the measuring tape to center the stickers, drawing a light pencil mark where the sticker will go, and then apply them. Smooth out any bubbles, and enjoy the look. For a slightly more permanent version, a stencil and black paint will also give you the look, and is even more adjustable to your personal preferences.

If you love the style, you may want to actually cut the holes at some point in the future. However, you may also want to keep things flexible and try out some of the other traditional kitchen features.
