If you have a small bathroom and a lot of supplies to store, you probably know the pain of finding a spot for rolls of toilet paper. These guys tend to go into cabinets and drawers, but every time you replenish your stock, it turns into a game of Tetris. This is especially true for families who need to purchase large, Costco-size stocks of supplies or budget-conscious households who want to avoid buying just a few rolls at a time. To solve this storage issue, some clever DIYers thought to use shoe hangers to store rolls behind their bathroom door. This is a smart and budget-friendly way to store rolls without wasting any space and to make the most of a small bathroom.

The idea, which comes from TikTok creator @maverickmkg, is to get a hanging shelf for shoes and use the slots for rolls of toilet paper instead of footwear. It works well because this kind of shoe organizer is designed with slanted sections to hold shoes at an angle, which is perfect for holding circular items like toilet paper that can easily roll and fall onto the ground when placed on flat, horizontal surfaces. This is especially true for behind-the-door storage solutions, which move every time you open the door and easily cause things to fall off.

To recreate this DIY, you'll want a behind-the-door shoe organizer with angled shelving. Look for something like Whitmor's Over The Door Shoe Organizer. Another common type of over-the-door shoe organizer has little individual shoe pockets, but these sections are typically too small to store toilet paper rolls. Be careful and look for the right model when buying a new organizer for this DIY, whether it's online or at secondhand shops.

How to use a shoe organizer for toilet paper rolls

If you find the right shoe organizer, this hack is fairly simple. All you need is enough space behind your bathroom door to place the organizer and a bit of room between the top of the door and the doorframe to fit the hooked attachment parts. You can also set this up behind the door of a closet or laundry room if you'd like to keep your bathroom clear of visual clutter.

If you're having a hard time finding the perfect shoe organizer for this hack, you can try to DIY your own, just as Instagram creator @vickyduboisphoto did. With inspiration from those hanging organizers, they created an organizer out of fabric. For this, you'd need to cut a long and thin rectangle out of fabric, fold it in half, and sew it closed into a loop at the top. Then, you'd sew the fabric together throughout to create pockets big enough to slide rolls of toilet paper into. Add a few over-the-door hooks, and you'll have your own DIY organizer.

This hack doesn't just work for toilet paper, it's also a great trick to store rolls of paper towels. You can also use the same trick in different parts of the house — behind the door of a walk-in pantry, for example. If you've got any room, you can use some of the extra space to store additional items, such a plastic laundry pod containers or even rolled-up towels. Make sure to avoid anything that could break when falling, like glass, since the organizer will naturally move as the door swings.
