Use Affordable Materials To Give A Basic IKEA Table Lamp A Gorgeous Upgrade
It can be difficult to choose the perfect lighting for your space — especially if you're on the hunt for something truly bespoke. Once you do finally find a piece you love, you may be deterred by the staggering price, as unfortunately, interesting, sculptural lighting can be expensive. If you're searching for a statement lamp with charm, Instagram user @tinalemac shared an incredibly beautiful and fairly easy method to create your own unique decorative lighting. She transformed an ordinary IKEA table lamp into a unique floral masterpiece. Similar designs can cost you hundreds of dollars, but with this clever DIY, you can create your own floral lamp for under $100.
The creator used the IKEA NÄVLINGE LED work lamp as a base for this project. She also used Krylon Hammered Brown spray paint, pink crepe paper, floral wire, and a hot glue gun. You can choose to use any combination of spray paint and crepe paper. For example, if you want to create a poppy-inspired lamp, you could opt for a dark green spray paint and red crepe paper.
Start this project by removing the lampshade, light bulb, and wire from the lamp. Place your lamp base on cardboard or some other area you don't mind getting messy and apply your spray paint. You'll likely need to apply multiple different layers. Once you're satisfied, set the base aside to dry. Now you'll need to create a stencil of your desired petal shape. You can make the design pointed or rounded. For more dimension and detail, trace out multiple stencil shapes or create a sepal leaf stencil on paper that matches your stem color. Once you have your stencils prepped, carefully cut out 10 to 12 petals from your crepe paper.
How to recreate this stunning DIY lamp
After you have all the petals cut out, it's time to reinforce them. Lay one of your paper petals down flat and run a bead hot glue down the center. Place your floral wire into the glue with a bit of extra wire hanging off the edge. Now pinch the base of the flower petal in towards each other. This should help create a more dynamic petal shape. Repeat this step with all your petals.
When you're done with your petals, put your lamp back together. The small lampshade at the end is going to serve as a brace for your petals. Carefully attach each petal by wrapping the extra bit of floral wire to the base of the lampshade. Work your way around, layering the petals as you go. Once you've attached all your petals, cut long strips of crepe paper and wrap them around the base of the lampshade to hide the wires and complete your project.
This DIY floral lamp is the perfect accent lighting idea for infusing your home with a healthy dose of whimsy. If you want to tie a room together using this lamp design, consider creating two so you can frame your couch or bed. Alternatively, you can recreate this design using a pendant for a larger, more impactful hanging floral hanging light. The basic idea of this lamp can be applied and reworked however you please. Get creative and try out different colors, shapes, and sizes to make this project your own!
