IKEA Has A Space-Saving Solution For Extra Storage In Your Bathroom

If you're like many of us, your bathroom is a little bit too small and a little bit too full. If you're short on space, you'll need a space-saving solution for extra storage. One option is IKEA's NYSJÖN high cabinet, a super slim, very tall, and surprisingly roomy cabinet that can fit into the tiniest of bathrooms. It's a reminder that you don't have to look for expensive bathroom remodel ideas; you can just buy a piece of furniture to add storage.

The power of this cabinet is its size and shape: Less than 12 inches wide, and less than 11 inches deep. It's about the size of a larger plant pot, which is something you can easily fit behind a door, in an awkward corner, or next to the toilet. But despite using very little floor space, it packs a punch vertically: Nearly 75 inches, or 6 feet 2 inches. With its basketball-player-height, this cabinet can fit several shelves, perfect for extra rolls of toilet paper, bath towels, bottles of shampoo, or bags of makeup. It's got a white door that covers up clutter, perfect for bathrooms with too much going on. You can pair these with other small bathroom shelf ideas that will maximize your space, without using floor space, like floating shelves. In short, it's a convenient way to maximize space in your small bathroom

The NYSJÖN cabinet retails at IKEA for $119.99, which is slightly more than some other options available online, like Mohope's narrow bathroom storage cabinet, but cheaper than custom cabinets. If you're on a budget, take inspiration from IKEA's tall cabinet and spend some time shopping around and looking for affordable alternatives. You might also be able to find some second-hand models.

How to use the IKEA NYSJÖN at home

Before you run to IKEA and get this high cabinet, there are a few things to consider. First, the cabinet only has two "legs", so it does require some wall attachment. This isn't unique: Oftentimes, with long and tall pieces, some kind of wall attachment is required to prevent the piece from being too top-heavy and potentially falling over. The difference here is that a simple Command Strip isn't enough; you'll need to drill into the wall. This is something to consider if you're a renter or aren't willing to screw the cabinet into the wall.

Another thing to note, which is an upside of this model, is that you can adjust the shelves' height. There aren't perforated holes throughout the entire cabinet's sides, but there are a few options for each shelf. This allows you to play with height to truly customize your storage space. And if you've got really tall things to store (a broom, laundry basket, or hand-held vacuum), you can skip adding one or several shelves altogether.

And if the four shelves that come with the cabinet aren't enough for you, you can add IKEA shelf risers like the VARIERA inserts to add some extra space. You can also stick some adhesive hooks onto the back of the cabinet's door or onto the sides to hang things as needed. You can also use this cabinet outside of the bathroom. For example, it can be a nice addition to a small kitchen in need of storage space, or used in a tight bedroom that doesn't have much space for a full wardrobe. Of course, it looks a bit "bathroom-y," but it's not anything a layer of spray paint can't fix.
