Not Baskets Nor Cabinets: This Antique Upcycle Makes The Perfect Storage Rack
If you are sick of plastic organizers and particle board cabinets that wear and tear after a season or two, antiques are your next (and best) long-lasting option. Where most people see outdated pieces, you can discover that vintage decor is full of history, character, and huge potential for a second life. So if you or your family owns an antique sewing machine that's seen better days, consider upcycling the frames and the shelves that came with the setup and turn it into a wall storage rack. These antique sewing machine cabinet tables are usually equipped with drawer frames made out of wood, which run deep enough to convert into a lovely, rustic storage rack.
For this project, you will be upcycling two wooden frames and one wood panel from the original table setup — however, feel free to use more than one wood panel if you want the wall rack to hold smaller items. If this DIY inspires you to head to the thrift to find this antique, Singer is the most common manufacturer of sewing tables, so keep an eye out for one of these classics. You will also need some tools and materials to assemble the wall storage rack. Prepare cleaning materials like a soft brush and a mild cleanser, along with repair and assembly tools such as nails, screws, extra wood panels if needed, a hammer, a wood saw to cut the shelf panel properly, and some sealant that will serve as a protective coat. You'll need some basic woodworking skills, but this is a beginner-friendly project.
Upcycling antique sewing cabinet drawers into storage racks
You will need first to dismantle the frames of both drawers from the sewing cabinet table. Remove any dirt or grime from the wooden frame with water, a gentle soap cleanser, and a soft brush or cloth before fixing any loose parts with new screws or nails. Next, get the wooden panel, then measure and cut it appropriately before attaching it to the bottom row of the frames. You can also affix more wooden panels on each layer of the frame for additional storage. Once you have restored and repaired both frames, attach them, one atop the other, by drilling screws or hammering nails for a sturdy build. Finish it all off with a sealer such as polyurethane or wax to protect the material and keep it intact.

Want to make your new, rustic storage rack look a little more chic and refreshed? Liven it up with even coats of spray paint to give it a pop of color, or cover the wooden boards with fabric of your choice by brushing on even coats of wood glue to the underside of the fabric and folding each side inward to cover your board. Afterwards, feel free to place it in any room you see fit — it can work as a stylish shelf for your bathroom essentials, or as a charming wall rack that can hold household items or craft baskets. For a more tasteful display, layer in a few potted plants or antique trinkets like ceramics, and make sure to avoid common shelf styling mistakes.
