Ditch The Closet Clutter: A Better Way To Organize Your Shoes And Save Space

No matter what, it seems like shoes are the first thing to clutter up our homes, especially if you store yours in closets. They're either stacked on top of one another or thrown about after a long day. Surely, there must be a better way to store and manage the piles of shoes that are waiting to fall out the second we open the door. That solution is definitely found in a DIY shoe tower, where they'll be shelved in a neat manner without the fear of excess mess. Plus, it'll help stop shoe clutter in a beautiful way that'll keep them organized

If this sounds daunting to you, there isn't an extensive list of supplies or skills you'll need to put this together. For your shoe tower, you'll just need a few simple items: several pieces of solid wood, preferably 1-by-8, as well as two longer pieces for the sides, measuring around 1-by-10. Also make sure to have a pocket-hole jig as well as a hammer drill. A circular saw is helpful if you plan on cutting your own wood, but it's not necessary. This shoe tower will allow you to successfully have long-term shoe storage

How to make a shoe tower

In a 2022 TikTok video by @eternalharvestdecor, the creator showcases this fun DIY. Grab wood of your choice from a hardware store like Home Depot or Lowe's. If you want to cut your own, you'll need that circular saw. Measure out the wood, and mark where to cut. Clamp the saw down and neatly cut along the line, but be sure to put on some safety goggles beforehand. To make it a floating shelf, drill your top piece to studs in the ceiling. Use your jig to create two pocket holes on the inside edges of the 1-by-8 pieces to screw them to your side boards. Line each shelf up between the side boards, and drill your screws through those pocket holes in order to attach them to the boards. Use extra short pieces of wood or other scraps to measure equal spaces between the shelves, and angle each piece so that your shoes are secured.

This shoe tower has lots of shelving, so you can compartmentalize your shoe sections. Separate running shoes, flip flops, open-toed shoes, and other kinds of footwear by shelf. Get organized while storing seasonal attire by leaving some you aren't currently wearing on the bottom shelves. Then place the shoes you wear every day on the top shelves or at eye level. This is better than leaving them in the closet because they won't collect dirt and residue like they would just being piled up atop of each other.
