You've read all the tips for creating the perfect indoor garden, but your sweet little ivy plant keeps wandering all over the counter space and you can't seem to keep those vines controlled. The internet is rife with cute mini trellises you can use in your potted plants, but after buying all the plants themselves, you don't feel like spending more money. Plus, you need help with all your vining plants, not just this one. Fortunately, you can DIY your own trellis alternative that's perfect for small planters with just a bit of twisted wire.

These twisted wire trellis alternatives are not just functional but also really cute and elevate the whole planter. You already spent tons of money and time looking for all the vining plants that will give your indoor space a fresh look. Now it's time to accentuate that vibe. This DIY wire trellis is a twisted vertical wire that will keep the climbing vines going upward, instead of outward. They're great for your tall plants and vines. The metal spirals also fit perfectly into small planters without looking bulky or out of place. To make them, you'll need bendable wire, wire cutters, and something to twist the wire around to shape it.

How to DIY a spiral wire stake for a small planter

Any type of thick wire that is pliable enough to bend, like this Mandala Crafts 12 Gauge Anodized Aluminum Wire, will work well for this DIY. To make it even more budget-friendly, you can give your plants extra support with a handy item that's sitting in your closet: a wire hanger. Whatever wire you choose, be sure it can stand up to the moisture of watering the plant and isn't going to rust. If the wire you have is a bit too thin, double it up and twist the two wire strands snuggly together to make it more sturdy.

Once you have the wire ready, decide how wide you want the twists of the wire to be and find something that's about the same width that you can use as a mold. It can be a leg chair, an old bottle, or a vase. For the spiral shape, twist the wire at the same width all the way up or make it more narrow at the top. Once you have an object to use as the mold, wrap the wire around it and cut off any excess. Slide the wire off of the mold gently so it holds its twisty shape. Then push one end of the wire into the soil of the planter deep enough so that it can stand on its own. Gently wrap your climbing vines around it, working your way up the wire. That's it! Feel free to add any sort of charms or extra accessories to the wires for a more whimsical look.
