Woman Gives $30 IKEA Lamp A Luxe Upgrade On A Budget: 'It's Giving High-End'

There aren't that many ways to make your home look and feel like you when you shop at IKEA. Sure, it's a reliable and affordable store where you can find almost everything you need, but that's exactly why everyone shops there. When everyone is buying the same $30 lamp, your space can start to look just like everyone else's. Well, unless you're a creative DIYer and choose to give a basic IKEA lamp a luxe but affordable upgrade.

This DIY comes from TikTok creator @perkinsonparkway, who used a bit of spray paint and a couple of zip ties to turn IKEA's HÅRSLINGA floor lamp into something that's completely fresh, modern, and stylish. The idea is to paint the stand of the lamp and to create a squiggly line with the wire using zip ties to hold it in place.

To do this hack, you'll need some spray paint. The original DIY used bright blue for the lamp's pole and a silver chrome color for the base. However, choose whichever color combo best matches your interior and tastes. Go for saturated colors like green, orange, or pink for a playful and fun DIY. For a more minimalist and muted look, use deeper and darker colors like olive green, chocolate brown, or dark red. You can also paint the entire lamp (pole and base) just one color and skip the dual-chromatic approach, if you prefer. In addition to the paint, you'll also need zip ties that are ideally the same color as the pole. Also, grab a decorative light bulb for the lamp, like IKEA's MOLNART donut-shaped light bulb. Other options include the IKEA MOLNART globe gray light bulb made of clear glass, or other models you might find online or at home hardware stores.

How to DIY a funky lamp out of IKEA's basic HÅRSLINGA

The first step of this DIY is to assemble the lamp's pole with the base. In short, you'll want the lamp fully built up until the point of adding the socket, light bulb, and wire. Apply two coats of your chosen paint, and let it dry completely. It's easier to work outside, though you can also make your spray paint DIYs easier with a tent to prevent leaks if working inside a garage.

Then, attach the socket part of the lamp to the pole, which clips onto the pole, and adjust the height (it will be hard to change it afterwards). Here, the wire typically falls to the ground next to the pole, but that's where the DIY magic happens. Instead of letting it be, use the zip ties to attach the wire to the pole and create a wavy "S" pattern with it. Pull on the wire to adjust the squiggles, making sure that they're approximately equal in size. Then, cut the tail of the zip ties. If you managed to get colored zip ties that match the painted pole, these should blend in and let the black wire shine. Finally, screw your decorative light bulb into the socket, and style your lamp in your living space.

You can customize this DIY further. For example, you can add decorative gems to the socket section using hard glue. You can also paint that part of the lamp, as long as you use some painter's tape to avoid any of it getting onto the wire. And, if you have any other lamps at home that have a similar top-down wire setup, you can use the same technique to create squiggles using zip ties.
