'Your Bed Is Not A Table': Fed-Up Man's Bed-Making Tutorial Has Internet Obsessed
Making your bed is a simple process on the surface. You just fluff up your pillow, flip back the cover, and you're set. However, if you want a pristine-looking bedroom and a bed you'll be hesitant to crawl into at the end of the day, you have to avoid the mistakes everyone makes when making their bed. That's why, if people see one perfectly made in a video, they tend to flock to the comments asking how the creator did it. That was the case with @louiburke on TikTok and Instagram, who was sent so many questions about how he made his beds that he decided to make a snarky response on how to do it properly, much to the joy of the internet.
Though viewers are most definitely obsessed with this video by @louiburke on TikTok, it may not necessarily be because of his bed-making skills. For the entire video, the creator gave off a frustrated, weary vibe, heavy on the sass. It was a hit on both social media platforms, receiving thousands of positive responses.
"You are so mean and I LOVE IT! Instant follow from me," said one comment on TikTok. "I need to get told off like this daily so I make my bed," said another on Instagram. The fed-up and tired attitude made people feel like they were in trouble, and several comments said it got them to actually put in effort to make their bed.
Following this tutorial is simple, once you know what to do
The video was sassy, but informative, while also being very specific, which was loved by viewers. "Your bed is not a table. The pillows do not sit on top of the duvet..." the creator said right at the beginning. His first step is to pull off the pillows and fully fold back the duvet. It needs to be about 40 centimeters (nearly 16 inches), according to Loui. He is also particular when it comes to the pillows. "And yes, it's four. It's not two, it's four." He continued, "flat [pillows] looks like a teenager's bedroom. You're not a teenager, you're an adult."
To arrange the pillows according to Loui, place them in stacks of two so they are parallel to the mattress, with one decorative lumbar pillow in the center if needed. There are a few reasons why he says it is the better choice. "The fitted sheet gets to breathe. This [duvet] is folded back. It is more convenient. It's more hygienic. It looks better."
However, the opinion on the actual design wasn't so positive. Quite a few comments discussed how the bed didn't look complete. "I love your attitude but hate the result," was another response. The pillow placement was one of the more common complaints, as a lot of people prefer the method of propping pillows against the headboard. However, placing them flat on the mattress, while not as common, isn't unheard of.
How to make this tutorial work better in your own bedroom
Though many of the comments were against it, his bed layout wasn't all that unusual. There are definitely ways you can make your bed wrong, but this isn't really one of them. The pillow orientation is up to the user, but it is not a bad option, nor unusual. It's a good way to get your pillows closer in position to how you sleep for less work before bed, and it's not very fussy, which means making your bed in the morning is a little easier. Also, folding down the duvet enough so the pillows aren't sitting on top is common practice.
It could also be the appearance that turns off some viewers. As a TikTok user said in the comments, "Designer here – this is just mid. So many other details you're missing." It's not that Loui's layout was bad, it simply needed a little more to actually make it look nice. Besides the singular decorative pillow, everything was pretty much the same color, including the pillows and the duvet. Even the headboard is a very similar shade. A bit of a pattern or a pop of color could sell the tutorial a bit more. For example, Martha Stewart's method for making your bed will keep your bedroom looking its best, and it involves flipping your duvet upside down so you get a small bit of color or pattern when you turn it down.
