When it comes to shopping for a home, about three-quarters of homebuyers find a fireplace to be a desirable feature. Fireplaces are perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere in the frigid winter months, and can also ground a room. But there are also reasons why a fireplace might not be in working condition. Damage to the chimney or chimney liner, an inoperable damper, or lots of creosote buildup are all valid reasons not to light a fire. Fortunately, that doesn't mean you need to rip it out. There are many clever ways to repurpose an unused fireplace for an organized and stylish home, and TikToker @bohofrisco puts her spin on this idea, adding strings of beads to turn dead space into a whimsical focal point.
Typical setups of an unusable fireplace include adding a set of decorative logs or candles on the hearth for a homey touch. But if you prefer a more fun, colorful style, a little creativity and a set of beads or beaded curtains is all you need to create an eye-catching design.
Turning dead space into whimsical decor
Fireplaces are, hands down, one of the dead spaces in your home you should take advantage of. And if you want to add some whimsy, all you need is a simple set of stringed beads that attach via a strip of adhesive, like this set from Amazon. TikToker @bohofrisco transformed her unusable fireplace by first placing blue peel-and-stick tile on the back of the firebox, then arranging candles on the hearth. For her final whimsical touch, she added colorful strings of beads to the front of the fireplace, carefully varying the lengths. Since the beads came with an adhesive sticker for attaching, she was able to easily stick the strings right where she wanted, making this such a fun and quick DIY.
@bohofrisco Fireplace final part!! Someone commented telling me I shouldn't use the fireplace anymore so yeah I guess I should make a few things clear! 1) this is NOT a working fireplace!!! and 2) these are not *unfinished* bricks! They are shiny and smooth. 3) I still don't know if any of this will hold but I'm willing to try a project and if it's a fail, at least I know... and the idea doesn't have to bump around in my head for another 3 months!! With that said, let me know if you have any questions and if you agree that it's so fun now!! #colorfulhomedecor #fireplacemakeover #easydiy #whimsicaldecor #renterfriendly
If you'd rather get crafty, you can create the cutest beaded curtains using marker caps with this whimsical DIY. Or if colorful beads aren't your style, a simple set of clear or wooden beads would work just as well. Since fireplaces are often built with brick, you may have a hard time getting adhesive to stick. If that's the case, a string of beads placed on a tension rod will do the trick. Adding this little decorative touch is a great way to draw the eye to the fireplace, no matter your style.
