Not IKEA: Consumer Reports Says This Is The Highest-Rated Place To Buy Furniture Online

The furniture shopping experience has evolved over the years. While past shoppers may have defaulted to searching for a new couch or nightstand in person, several retailers offer a superior online experience. Considering the long list of best new IKEA items in 2026, you may immediately think the Scandinavian store is the obvious choice for online shopping. However, a Consumer Reports' survey revealed the top place to buy furniture online based on customer feedback was, in actuality, Room & Board. It was the highest-rated online furniture retailer while Costco and Restoration Hardware were close behind. The lowest customer rating went to Ashley Furniture HomeStore.

Consumer Reports' survey showed shoppers prioritized quality, style, and price during their online buying journey. Room & Board received the highest scores with Consumer Reports members for the quality of its products and delivery. It also earned positive scores for on-time delivery. It's worth noting that Consumer Reports also sourced customer ratings for the best places to buy furniture in-person. In this survey, Stickley and Room & Board were the top two retailers for furniture shopping at a brick-and-mortar store.

What sets Room & Board apart from other online stores

Shopping for furniture online provides more convenience, flexibility, and could result in finding the perfect piece of furniture at a lower price. Room & Board offers a range of policies and resources that simplifies shopping online for furniture. For starters, the retailer makes it easy for online shoppers to view a piece of furniture in their home just by scanning a QR code on its website. This feature ensures you can find the perfect size dining table or sofa for your space.

Additionally, Room & Board offers free returns and exchanges for 90 days after a delivery with proof of purchase. This return policy even applies to custom furniture. Room & Board also won't charge a cancellation fee if you change your mind about an order before it's delivered.

Room & Board differs from other online furniture retailers in that it doesn't offer sales or discounts. Typically, most furniture stores offer store-wide sales around holidays or changing seasons, so customers can periodically check the website to see if prices have dropped. Instead, Room & Board updates its prices in January and June with clearance events in May and November. According to its website, the company doesn't offer sales or discounts because it doesn't inflate the prices on its furniture in the first place. While this means you won't necessarily save big during a holiday sale, it also takes the pressure off of making a purchase within a tight window.
