Joanna Gaines has helped fix up many a disorganized home. Because in addition to gifting her devoted fanbase with an appreciation for all things shiplap and a well-placed oversized clock, the design pro has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to items that can cut through the clutter. "I think storage is the most undervalued part of a home," she acknowledged in an interview with Architectural Digest, regarding her knack for genius organizational ideas. "Adequate storage can make every room feel more peaceful and beautiful simply by removing clutter and freeing up visual space. I like to purchase unique pieces that offer a lot of practical organizational space."

Sometimes the "Fixer Upper" star's solutions are startlingly straightforward. Because while one of the Magnolia founder's Instagram posts was meant to highlight her brand's collection with Loloi Rugs, we couldn't help but get, uh, hooked by the hack on display in the background. Relying on a set of pegs or hooks is one of the designer's favorite tips for making an entryway more functional — whether it's in one of her renovations or inside the farmhouse she shares with husband Chip Gaines and their five kids. As it can be quite easy for that space to become overwhelmed by various grab and go items such as coats, hats, backpacks, and keys, providing a spot for everything to go ensures it will remain in place and not all over the floor. And mounting everything onto the wall doesn't eat up precious square footage.

How to add pegs to your entryway

Admittedly, it's not all that difficult to get the hang of Gaines' storage hack. Start with some pegs that complement your home's aesthetic. While Gaines is undoubtedly a fan of farmhouse decor, options abound from more traditional varieties, to sleek and modern, rustic styles, or something with a more cottagecore feel. In the example Gaines shared to social media, she lined up a row of individual pegs, like this evory natural wood set from Amazon. But she's also been known to use one single rack with hooks, like the industrial-style pick she hung in their Texas farmhouse.

To truly nail the storage solution, you can either place your preferred pegs onto a backer board that you then attach straight to the wall or you can screw them directly into your wall studs using three-inch screws. Though if you plan to use the pegs for backpacks or other heavier pieces, you'll want to insert a drywall anchor first. While placing your pegs 60 to 66 inches off the floor is ideal for adult use, hanging up a lower set at roughly 48 inches will make it easier for little hands to reach. And to truly take advantage of your wall's vertical space, consider adding several rows of pegs and even assigning an area for each member of the family.
