Woman Turns $8 IKEA Bowls Into A Stylish Coffee Table On A Budget

You don't have to spend a fortune to have a high-end looking home. With stylish IKEA items (even HGTV stars love using IKEA products in homes) and a bit of DIY magic, you can cultivate home decor that looks like it's straight out of an interior design magazine. One creator, Frejo Design, shared her ingenious DIY coffee table on TikTok. The design involves sticking two stainless steel serving bowls from IKEA together before plastering them to create spherical legs for a glass table.

This DIY offers a clever way to update your living room on a budget. You'll need several IKEA Blanda Blank bowls, heavy-duty adhesive and screws, plaster, a scraper, sandpaper, a sponge, and a glass tabletop. These bowls come in a few different sizes, and the medium-sized bowls used in the video are only $7.99. You can find a glass tabletop at a thrift shop or online at sites like Etsy or Facebook Marketplace — just be sure you can easily remove any existing legs.

While the creator uses white plaster, there is a world of other colors to choose from as well. For instance, using a dusty coral color could add soft warmth to your space. Or perhaps a bold red for a more intense, impactful statement. You can also customize the glass top, using smoked glass for a moody design or textured glass for an airy look. Just be sure you go with tempered glass, as this is the safest pick in case the table breaks. You can also skip the glass altogether and go for a marble or stone tabletop. Just keep in mind the weight of your chosen tabletop and the size of the bowls used for legs.

Create your own high-end looking coffee table

To craft your own version of this DIY home project, start by creating a sphere with two IKEA bowls. For a bit more weight, you can add sand to the bottom bowl. Line up the lip of each bowl to form the sphere. Now use a heavy-duty adhesive to attach them securely. Allow the glue to cure per the packaging instructions. Repeat this step with your other bowls. Once all the bowls are prepared, it's time to plaster. Use your scraper to apply the plaster and fully cover your sphere. You can also use a gloved hand to apply it if that's easier. When you get your spheres looking roughly how you want them, allow the plaster to dry. You can sand them down and use a wet sponge to work out any spots at this point.

Now it's time to attach your glass tabletop. There are a few ways to go about doing this. Frejo Design attaches the glass top with metal hardware, creating a hole at the top of each sphere to feed it through. However, you can also use less labor-intensive methods. For instance, you can use your heavy-duty adhesive to attach the glass to the sphere.

If you want a less permanent method, work with tension. Place a small silicone spacer or suction cup on top of each sphere and set the glass on top. The high-friction, non-slip material will keep the tabletop in place. Once you secure the surface, you're free to style your elegant coffee table however you please.
