A wall, a refrigerator, a door. Due to their high visibility, these surfaces in a home are some of the best places to post your daily tasks, especially if you find yourself regularly forgetting those to-do items. One unconventional option for displaying your reminders on one of these spaces uses a common household item that you might otherwise toss in the bin: an empty egg carton. In an upcycle DIY, YouTuber Tracy Tips demonstrates how to quickly build such a command center for the home.

The process for this hack is fairly straightforward and affordable, requiring only a piece of twine or string in addition to the carton itself. If you don't already have some at home, you can buy a roll on Amazon for around $5, like a twine bundle from PerkDecor. However, supplies aside, the real question here is whether or not this savvy DIY is really a practical, long-term solution for displaying your daily to-dos — or if it's just another social media concept that looks better in theory than in real everyday use.

The practicality of a DIY egg carton bulletin board

It's worth noting that this hack works best with a larger-sized egg carton, such as one for 30 eggs. Standard dozen-count egg cartons aren't quite big enough, though you could always join three cartons together as a workaround. To get started, poke two small holes near the top center of the egg carton using a pair of scissors or a knife. Next, cut a piece of twine of about 18 inches and thread it through the holes, tying it into a knot at the top. That's it! Your egg carton bulletin board is now ready to be hung up on a wall hook or clip, to a door with some double-sided tape, or with a magnetic hook on your fridge. Once displayed, use thumbtacks or pushpins to add your daily notes.

So, does this DIY stack up as a smart way to repurpose a large egg tray? We find it an okay option, sure. The main downside to using an egg carton for this purpose would be the concave shape of each egg cup. Placing your pushpins might prove challenging, and trying to maneuver a pin, thumbtack, or Post-it note inside or around those cup-like compartments seems cumbersome and a bit impractical.

Some better options for DIY-ing bulletin boards include foam boards, cork, or even an upcycled piece of cardboard. These materials are all affordable (even, free!), like egg cartons, but they also critically have flat surfaces, which allow you to maximize the entire space. Plus, if you do use one of these other materials for your DIY board instead, you can always turn your large egg carton into a creative storage hack for a more organized home.
