Not Goodwill Or Salvation Army: The Texas-Born Thrift Store Chain Full Of Hidden Treasures

According to a 2024 Thrift Report survey by Savers Value Village, over 40% of Gen Z consumers identify themselves as "thrifters." The U.S. secondhand market, meanwhile, continues an upward trajectory, for both large and small independent chains. In 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that the National Association of Resale & Thrift Shops (NARTS) estimated the number of resale, consignment, and not-for-profit resale shops in the United States stood at over 25,000.

Among that store count is Texas Thrift, a growing regional chain based in the Lone Star state. Founded in 2008, Texas Thrift stores support sustainable shopping, and carry your common thrifting finds, including everything from home décor and furniture to apparel, books, and toys.

Currently, Texas Thrift has 17 stores located in major Texas hubs, including San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas. If you're in Texas and haven't visited one of these local thrift shops yourself, know that the selection changes often. The Texas Thrift website says locations are "restocked daily." Meanwhile, per an online review for a Houston store, the shopper shared that new donations are rotated in each week regularly.

Since the stores' inventory depends on donations, this means you may find some of the amazing vintage brands that are always worth buying at one Texas Thrift, while another location could have a completely different lineup of products. All Texas Thrifts offer daily color-tag discounts that are worth 25%, 50%, or 75%.

In addition to differences in brand and item availability at individual stores, you may also notice location-specific pricing structures. For example, Dallas has a cost of living that's roughly 2% above the national average, while San Antonio is about 9% below it. This variation could be reflected in the price tags at a Texas Thrift in each city. Some consumers also mention that Texas Thrift appears to be more expensive (especially recently) compared to stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army.

For a look inside some Texas Thrift stores, check out the chain's Instagram page. Its Reels feature real consumers showing off their thrifted finds. There are also seasonal posts with highlighted pieces, including home décor. And, if you know how to spot valuable, high-end items – like looking for the all-important maker's mark — you may just spot a piece or two worth scooping up.

Finally, Texas Thrift gives back to the local community through its weekly discount programs for military members and seniors. Shoppers aged 55 and older receive 30% off their entire purchase every Tuesday, while active-duty military and veterans get a 30% discount on Wednesdays. (FYI: Be sure to bring your ID to take advantage of these programs.) (Check out our list of the best thrift stores in America for home goods.)
